Aussie town loses pub crawl record

AS if losing the ashes and the Rugby World Cup to England wasn't bad enough.

Now the Poms have triumphed at another great Australian pastime: drinking.

London has officially hosted the world's biggest pub crawl, snatching the record from the small regional Queensland city of Maryborough.

A final total of 2278 registered drinkers took part in London's world record attempt on October 14, just 41 people more than officially attended Maryborough's record setting attempt in June this year.

Maryborough Shire Councillor Anne Nioa, said the Brits' success had made organisers determined to hold an even bigger pub crawl next year and bring the title back to Australia.

"I'm quite sure once the news gets out that they've only beaten us by 41, the city of Maryborough will be extremely determined.

"It's a fairly Australian thing that if the Poms have beaten us at something, we won't have much trouble convincing them to take up the challenge next time."

When compared to the capital of England, which has a population of more than 10 million and 1500 pubs, Maryborough (population 26,000) has certainly been punching above its pint glass.

Cr Nioa predicted more than 3500 people would take part in next year's attempt – due to be held on the Queen's birthday weekend.

She believes a similar amount took part in this year's event though many forgot to hand in their drinks cards at the end of the night.

"You do find that some of them get a little tired and emotional by the end of it and forget to hand their cards in, so next year we are just going to be more diligent with our card collecting."

All of Maryborough's 17 pubs take part in the annual event, which set the first world record in 2004.

Participants need to have at least one drink (not necessarily alcoholic) at 10 pubs within six hours.

Cr Nioa said the event was an economic windfall for the city, with participants coming from across the country and many overseas visitors in town for this year's event
