ok, the Government are backing the De-sal plant (kickbacks must've been quite generous), but why is stormwater harvesting not being explored?
Why not have an integrated water management plan?
I'm no ecologist, but what would be wrong with diverting our stormwater away from the seas into catchment areas, where natural filtration of the water can take place, prior to it arriving for treatment?
If anyone can point out any faults in this theory, please do...

Your points are generally valid but it's not a simple matter to implement.

An integrated water management plan - correct, there is isn't one because SA Water are responsible for potable water and wastewater management, the Department of Water, Land, Biodiversity and Conservation have some water management responsibilities such as the Murray, and the councils have stormwater responsibility, so it's all over the place. This is the biggest of all the issues is the State Government doesn't seem interested to develop one. They have a waterproofing strategy which is just a tokenism to deflect political criticism.

Salisbury Council have shown the way with stormwater harvesting but for reasons only known to them, the State Government is not interested.

The main issue with stormwater harvesting is logistics and water quality, but these issues can be overcome.

And I'm happy to say the new "Wetlands" at Breakout Creek did very well....

Just a pity that millions of litres of water ran out to sea.

And rightly so.
Seen the Murray upstream from Milang lately ?
It would be a foolish decision to relax water restrictions anytime in the next 12 months.

No I haven't, it would make more sense if we made more of an effort to salvage as much as we can at times like this.

Exactly

A couple of heavy downfalls allow us to just reach our historical yearly average and people think everything's OK

I think the Lower Lakes need about 50 of those downfalls in 50 days

We are the driest state in the driest continent so water restrictions will never go away

Our grandkids will be amazed that we used to wash our cars in the street and forget to turn the automatic sprinklers off

I've just checked the radar - something I do often - Especially when there is rain around.

http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR462.loop.shtml#skip

It's interesting that the actual rain is travelling in a different direction than it normally does.
Normally goes across the map from Yorke Peninsula way towards Adelaide - this time coming down on us from the top end of the state.

Interesting...lol.

Just thought I'd share that with everyone

About to hit the Vale any second now TY,
But yes, looks like heavy-ish downpour and not much after that.

Murray Bridge area seems to have had the heaviest falls in the past hour.

Have noticed that it occasionally does this over the warmer months, and has lead to some ocacsions when we have had huge downpours ie 4-5 inches over a few hours, either in Adelaide or the lower/mid-north. System seems to curl back on itself with an easterly and if it meets with another system coming from the west as per usual, anything can happen. Never trust an east wind.....
