Re: dick jones
According to the Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers, there was a Richard Jones who played 19 games for South Melbourne in 1949 & 1951. Could well be him. You'd like to think someone who coached SANFL had at least played league somewhere.

Re: dick jones
Dick Jones was actually a Western Australian, from the same small town as the Carr brothers, and like them played for East Fremantle before being lured east by South Melbourne. On his way back home after his second season with the Swans, Jones was convinced to stay in Adelaide for a while, and on the recommendation of his landlord, legendary Glenelg ruckman/policeman "Blue" Johnston, adopted the same two employers (GFC & SAPOL).
He unwittingly became quite a well-known cop being the junior of the two Homicide Squad detectives sent to Ceduna in December 1958 to investigate the rape and murder of a nine year-old girl. The subsequent arrest and trial of Rupert Max Stuart has been the subject of millions of legal and journalistic words since then, culminating about seven or eight years ago in the movie Black or White starring Robert Carlyle (Hamish Macbeth, Trainspotting etc.) Jones' role in the process was sufficiently important to have an actor play his character in the movie.
Jones was not a career cop and gave it away after about eight years. At last report (late 2008), he was very much alive and well. He is now 83.

Jimmy Deane will probably always be my favourite SANFL commentator. He must be nearly getting into his 90's now (I presume Jimmy is still with us).
Jim is certainly still with us. Unfortunately he has not been too well of late.
