Friday lunch in town

Postby tipper » Mon Feb 01, 2010 1:31 pm

Hi all. just a question for anyone that cares to respond. My work has just relocated into the cbd, grenfell st opposite harris scarfe to be precise, and my esteemed colleagues and i are now in the market for a new watering hole. unfortunately the only places i normally frequent in town are the type that dont open till well after lunch time (and my female workmates might not be happy with the floor shows....)

So to the experts, what establishment do people recommend and why?

The Office (or whatever it's called now) on Pirie Street used to do a good meal, otherwise the Griffins Head is not too far away.

That would probably mean that you work for DTEI and have moved into the old SA Water building.

When I worked for SA Water the local was the Historian.

The Griffin's Head in Hindmarsh Square is close by.
Haven't been there in years, so no idea what it's like these days.
Always seems to have a good crowd when we've gone past.
The Elephant down Rundle Street was fun last time we went.

Not that it was a competition, but we have a winner! the historian has been suggested, but none of us here have too much of an idea. i thought i better check with some wiser heads (drunker???) than ours!

Fully renovated and extended out Sabre! It's schmicko now, but of course beer prices have escalated accordingly.

The other one that has the cheapest beer we've found is 1862 bar in Pirie St. $5 pints of Pale on a Friday, sitting across the road from the people spending $6 and upward at The Office.

I had an interesting experience there once, a car came from Pulteney St but instead of turning onto Grenfell St, actually drove up the footpath (of Grenfell St), hit a young bloke at the bus stop and stopped just before the kerb before the Griffins Head, wasn't heading for me and my 2 friends who were sitting a couple of metres over the left to where it ended, but it could have easily resulted in some real carnage.

I drink at the Woolshed, $4 pints and $12 steak and pint deals. I love Hindley St!

But for your end if town I used to drink at the Office only because it was the closest pub but a he'll of a lot of wankers drank there and you'd sometimes have to wait a long time for a beer as they were making coffee for some dipshit who was there for a meal, miss that place like a hole in the head. I'd go along with others recommendation of the Historian although it's a little cramped and just getting a beer can be a problem, having said that Ill be having lunch there on Thursday.

It's the biggest problem with most pubs around there, full of wankers and hard to get a quick beer. Down Hindley St I can get a beer straight away 99% of the time and there's plenty of room to move around.

To tell the truth I don't like many if the pubs down that end of town, too many wankers in suits. I've been working on Currie St for quite a while now and much prefer this end of town. Better people, better food, better shops and most importantly better pubs.
