Best ever Aussie one-day side

Postby westozfalcon » Sat Nov 18, 2006 7:23 pm

I heard that some time soon a best ever Australian one-day side is going to be named. Interestingly it is going to be decided upon by votes from all players who have ever represented Australia in one-day internationals.

This would be my team (in batting order):-

Mark Waugh
Adam Gilchrist
Dean Jones
Greg Chappell
Allan Border (capt)
Michael Bevan
Simon O'Donnell
Shane Warne
Craig McDermott
Dennis Lillee
Glenn McGrath

12th - Peter Taylor

Yes i would have thought if S Waugh couldn't make the 11, he'd at least be a candidate for 12th man :P

Cant argue with that line up.
Jones retires + Ponting takes over after
Bevan retires +Hussey takes over after

OTHERS ?

Jones/Hussey/Lehmann/Watson

12th man has to be Peter Taylor.

Pi55 bevo off and put Steve Waugh in. Bevo was the most overrated one day cricketer in history.

Well spotted.
He has to be in the best team without doubt the most
destructive middle order batsman we have had.

Peter Taylor was a pretty good fielder actually. I remember him taking some screamer catches in the green & gold. He bowled very intelligently in one-day cricket too. He'd have been the spinner in my 11 but nobody could get the nod over Warnie!

Also with Steve Waugh which batsman should I have left out to fit him in?
Perhaps Bevan if anyone however you can't ignore Bevo's running between wickets, turning ones into twos, twos into threes etc.

I agree with REB bevan was soooooo overrated it isnt funny, seriously the only reason he had a good average was because he always got not out, he always played for red ink no matter what the stage. And to put Jones ahead of Ponting dont make me laugh, ponting is one of the greatest cricketers this worlds ever seen.

He only ran when he thought he could get on strike.

Yes, Ponting would make ANY Australian team (Test or ODI) since Bradman retired. I also tend to agree with Bevan. Whereas he had considerable success as a one day player, he did play a particularly self absorbed style of game.

I agree with Ponting over Jones. Ponting is often overlooked when people talk about the greats of the modern game but really he is one of the best batsmen to have played. Obviously Bradman is in a class of his own but the next group would contain Ponting. I speak of his batting ability only not his captaincy though

Jones over Ponting is not so outrageous as some make it sound. Sure Ponting has more one-day runs on the board but then again he has played (so far) nearly 100 more games than Deano. Also Deano's ODI average (to date) is superior to Ponting's 44.61 vs 41.31 !

And Jones played in an era where the quality of attacks across the board was better, the ovals were larger and the pitches weren't all roads.

In test cricket Ponting is a class above Deano.
In o/d cricket I cant split them.
Jones spent some of his cricketing life against some great West Indian bowlers

I'm certainly not disputing that Ponting is an outstanding batsman and will probably finish his career as one of the all time greats of Australian cricket but Jones was something special in one day cricket and in some ways he was probably ahead of his time.
I can understand Peter Taylor being talked about for a side like this because he was one of the best competitors that played for Australia IMHO, had a heap of guts (read the section in Steve Waughs' book about Taylor batting for several hours in a test in Pakistan in 1988 on a pitch that wasn't fit for backyard cricket) and he left it all out on the ground and got the most out of the ability he had. I seem to remember that he had a knack of getting a wicket when one was really needed and despite bowling offspin, he was usually fairly economical.

All valid points. I stand corrected.

On Jones he also was dealt with pretty harshly by selectors and by virtue of this never played the amount of international cricket (particularly Test cricket) that he should have. Had he been able to play as long as Ponting who knows.

I don't profess to know the full story on Jones and his run ins with the establishment but he certainly wasn't scared to speak his mind and it seems that he was 'retired' by the ACB.
