Roy Keane was within moments of celebrating his first victory as Ipswich manager before Chris Morgan's injury-time equaliser for Sheffield United forced a 3-3 draw at Bramall Lane.
The Tractor Boys had claimed just two points before the game and normal service appeared to resume when Darius Henderson put United ahead early on.
Jonathan Walters levelled though, and Grant Leadbitter made it 2-1 to Ipswich before Gareth McAuley got a third with 20 minutes to go.
However, Henderson pulled one back as he put the ball into the top corner with Morgan popping up in stoppage time to secure a point after a blunder by Town keeper Richard Wright.

West Brom failed to take advantage of Newcastle's inactivity by going down 3-1 at Barnsley.
The Tykes, who began the night in the bottom three, went ahead in the 14th minute when Adam Hammill converted from close range after good work from Jon Macken and Iain Hume doubled the lead from the penalty spot when Shelton Martis fouled Macken.
Martis then steered the ball into the back of his own goal with 10 minutes to go, and although Chris Brunt pulled one back late on it was nothing more than a consolation.

Leicester claimed a 1-0 win at Middlesbrough after Lloyd Dyer blasted the ball into the net with seven minutes to go.

Four goals by Michael Chopra led Cardiff to a 6-1 demolition of Derby.
Peter Whittingham put them ahead early at the Cardiff City Stadium and Chopra extended their advantage shortly before the interval.
Rob Hulse pulled one back for the Rams but it was a false promise as Chopra, who got another three, and Chris Burke led the Welsh team to a comprehensive victory.

Preston, in third, went down to a surprise 2-1 home defeat by Reading.
Reading went into half-time 2-0 to the good for the second consecutive away game having also led Peterborough at London Road.
Simon Church put the Royals ahead just after the half-hour mark with a neat finish and Jimmy Kebe doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time.
A Jon Parkin penalty with five minutes to go gave the Lilywhites some hope but the Royals held on.

Blackpool started the night in fifth but goals by Nicky Maynard and Danny Haynes eased Bristol City to a 2-0 victory at Ashton Gate.

Coventry claimed a 3-2 win over Watford in a see-saw game at Vicarage Road.
Sammy Clingan's fine 20-yard effort fired Chris Coleman's men ahead inside the opening 10 minutes, but Tom Cleverley soon levelled.
Striker Will Hoskins grabbed his first goal of the season eight minutes before the interval to give the Hornets a deserved lead at half-time.
However, two Leon Best goals saw the Sky Blues seal a win.

Plymouth leapfrogged Ipswich at the bottom of the table thanks to a 2-1 win at Peterborough courtesy of goals by Jamie Mackie and Rory Fallon, Craig Mackail-Smith pulling one back. It was the Pilgrims' first win of the campaign.

Doncaster and Swansea shared a 0-0 draw, as did Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday.

Substitute Marlon Harewood's first Newcastle goal rescued a point in a 1-1 draw for the Coca-Cola Championship leaders after QPR threatened to dent their promotion charge.
The on-loan Aston Villa striker poked home Andy Carroll's 70th-minute header to cancel out Ben Watson's early opener - which deflected off Steven Taylor -and increase the Magpies' lead at the top of the table to three points.
However, the visitors will consider themselves unfortunate not to have left Tyneside with all three points on a night when the pace of winger Wayne Routledge and the movement of midfielder Watson were simply too much for their hosts.
Danny Guthrie had a first-half penalty saved by Radek Cerny after defender Damion Stewart was penalised for handball in the box as he blocked Taylor's shot, and Carroll and Kevin Nolan both went close, but QPR also had their chances.

Luke Chambers headed home a second-half Chris Cohen corner to set Nottingham Forest on their way to a deserved 2-0 win against a lacklustre and decidedly average Scun.thorpe side.
Billy Davies' men dominated possession throughout and despite some wasteful finishing, secured the points - and back-to-back Coca-Cola Championship wins - with two goals in quick succession after 70 minutes, with Dexter Blackstock doubling the home side's lead after Chambers' opener.
Cohen whipped in a corner from the right which Chambers met strongly with a powerful header to make it 1-0.
And soon after the opener came the second as Paul Anderson made a burst through the middle towards the right. He eventually fired in a low cross which was met by the onrushing Blackstock who converted to make it two after 72 minutes.
Jonathan Forte was unlucky not to halve the deficit for Scun.thorpe with seven minutes remaining as his strong run and shot through the middle agonisingly rebounded off the post after a deflection off Lee Camp in the Forest goal.

Coca-Cola Championship promotion rivals Preston and West Brom cancelled each other out in a 0-0 draw at Deepdale on Saturday.
The two sides are among the favourites to gain promotion to the Premier League, but there were few glimpses of genuine quality in a drab encounter.
Albion remain in second place as a result of the draw, three points behind leaders Newcastle, whose game against Bristol City ended goalless, while Preston slip to fifth.

Middlesbrough eased some of the pressure on manager Gareth Southgate with a 2-0 victory over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.
Sean St Ledger grabbed the opener for the Teessiders after 12 minutes and Leroy Lita added a brilliant second after the break as he raced down half the pitch before lashing it into the back of the net.

Martyn Waghorn's second-half strike earned Leicester a 1-1 draw against Coventry at the Ricoh Arena.
Sammy Clingan fired the hosts into a first-half lead with a sensational free-kick - his third goal in four Championship matches.
However, Waghorn equalised after 71 minutes with a shot on the run from the edge of the box.

Watford made a bright start at home to Cardiff, but it was to prove a false dawn as they lost 4-0.
Peter Whittingham's penalty put the Bluebirds ahead before Adam Matthews' free-kick from around 50 yards deceived Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach and drifted into the net.
The game was all but over in the 66th minute when Whittingham headed in a third and things went from bad to worse seconds later when Jay Bothroyd capped a stunning performance with a brilliant fourth.

At the other end of the table, Roy Keane's poor luck continues after Jonathan Macken's stoppage-time winner for Barnsley secured a 2-1 victory over Ipswich.
Iain Hume scored for the second consecutive game to give Barnsley the lead before Liam Rosenior's header brought Ipswich level.
The hosts were awarded a controversial penalty in the 74th minute but Hume smashed it against the crossbar.
However, Ipswich's luck was shortlived as Macken grabbed all three points with virtually the last kick of the game.

Fellow strugglers Peterborough slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest.
Aaron Mclean headed Peterborough in front five minutes into the second half but their lead lasted a matter of seconds before Radoslaw Majewski levelled with his third goal of the season and Paul Anderson fired Forest into the lead five minutes later.

Plymouth finally recorded their first win at Home Park with a 2-1 victory over ****.
The Pilgrims had lost their previous four home games but went in front thanks to Rory Fallon's 57th-minute header.
Gary Hooper levelled from the spot after Romain Larrieu had brought down Martyn Woolford in the area but Plymouth immediately restored their advantage thanks to Alan Judge's penalty after he was fouled by Josh Lillis.

Crystal Palace cruised to a 4-1 victory in their game against Blackpool.
Alex Baptiste briefly headed his side back into the game seven minutes after the break following first-half goals from Alan Lee and Neil Danns, but Palace swiftly restored their two-goal advantage thanks to Darren Ambrose and Alassane N'Diaye added a fourth.

Lee Croft's 17th-minute strike sent Derby on their way to 3-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Pride Park.
James McEveley volley in a second and Rob Hulse sealed the result from the spot.

Elsewhere, Richard Cresswell equalised with a brave diving header on his first start for Sheffield United to secure a 1-1 draw against Doncaster.
James Hayter had earlier scored on the stroke of half-time to give Rovers a scarcely-deserved lead.

QPR shot themselves in the foot at the Liberty Stadium as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Swansea, ending the game with nine men.
Martin Rowlands was dismissed for a second yellow in the 53rd minute but it was not until 21 minutes later that Mark Gower fired Swansea in front.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors two minutes later when Ben Watson also saw red and Lee Trundle made sure of the points soon after.

Tuesdays Wrap

Cardiff and Middlesbrough closed the gap on West Brom and Newcastle to a solitary point as the Coca-Cola Championship's top two clubs both lost tonight.
Cardiff's 2-0 win at home to Coventry - after goals from Anthony Gerrard (five) and a Peter Whittingham penalty on the hour - was all the more valuable following Newcastle's surprise 2-1 defeat at **** and West Brom's equally unexpected 1-0 setback at home to Swansea.
Similarly, there was good reason for Middlesbrough celebration too after Adam Johnson struck twice - with a 22nd-minute penalty and then again just before the hour - to put them within a whisker of the top of the table after a 2-0 win over Derby.

The Magpies came unstuck at Glanford Park, where Martyn Woolford's goals after 53 minutes and 79 minutes ruined their night and Kevin Nolan's goal after 65 minutes did not do enough to save them.

The architect of West Brom's downfall was painfully familiar, Swansea's Craig Beattie scoring the only goal of the game against his old team at The Hawthorns.

There was another bitter blow for Roy Keane as his Ipswich side again let a lead slip, this time in the 90th minute to end up with only a point from a 1-1 draw at home to Watford.
The Blues remain bottom of the pile after Nathan Ellington's equaliser in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage-time for the Hornets, after Gareth McAuley's fifth-minute effort had seemed destined to ease some of the pressure on Keane.

Preston stayed on the heels of the top teams with a 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday, who were one of only two teams to lose at home.
Goals from Neil Mellor (20) and Jon Parkin (55) did the trick, with Michael Gray (38) giving the Owls only fleeting hope.

Nottingham Forest left it late before they too put themselves in the thick of the battle amid the top-of-the-table congestion.
Guy Moussi was the matchwinner with a 90th-minute strike in a 1-0 victory at home to Barnsley - only to be sent off for a second bookable offence as he celebrated his achievement.

Blackpool were another team to make ground on the leaders - with a 3-0 lead at home to Sheffield United thanks to Marcel Seip (60), Jason Euell (69) and Charlie Adam (82).

Paul Gallacher (59 and 81) scored both goals in Leicester's 2-0 win at home to Crystal Palace, which kept them in touch with all the other pace-setters.

Bristol City are still ninth - albeit only three points off the top - after their 3-1 win at home to Plymouth, all the goals coming in a six-minute second-half spell.
Danny Haynes (73), Jamie McCombe (76) and Nicky Maynard (79) scored for City - and Jamie Mackie (75) for the Pilgrims.

QPR were 4-1 winners at home to struggling Reading in a match which finished with both teams down to 10 men.
Rangers' Akos Buzsaky scored the first goal from a free-kick just before the half-hour, seconds after Ben Wilson had been sent off for a second booking when he tried to take the shot too quickly.
Jay Simpson (39), Rowan Vine (71) and Patrick Agyemang (83) completed the hosts' tally - Brian Howard (86) with the Royals' consolation after their defender Ivar Ingimarsson had been sent off for a second yellow card.

Goals from Billy Sharp (17), Dean Shiels (21) and Jason Shackell (85) gave Doncaster a 3-1 success at home to Peterborough. Aaron McLean netted a 32nd-minute goal for Posh.

West Brom went above Newcastle to the top of the Coca-Cola Championship after coming from a goal down to beat Reading 3-1 at The Hawthorns on Saturday
The Baggies trailed early on to Matt Mills' header, but Jerome Thomas ensured the two sides went into the interval on level terms.
The hosts then went ahead when Thomas got his second goal of the afternoon as he slid the ball under Adam Federici.
West Brom rounded off the scoring when Youssouf Mulumbu sent in a first-time volley from the edge of the area.

Newcastle blew their chance to go clear once again as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat in the late game at Nottingham Forest.
Dexter Blackstock just beat the Newcastle offside trap in the final minute of the first half and scuffed a shot into the corner of the net for the only goal of the evening.

Fellow high-flyers Middlesbrough went down 1-0 at home to Watford, with Tom Cleverley coolly slotting home in the first half.
The hosts thought they had equalised at the start of the second half when Sean St Ledger headed home from close range.
But the home side's joy was cut short as St Ledger - on loan from Preston - was adjudged to have pushed a Watford defender.
Tony McMahon hit the post for Boro while Leroy Lita, Adam Johnson and Jeremie Aliadiere all had efforts but the Hornets held on as Boro lost their third consecutive home game.

As a result, Cardiff's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace was sufficient to lift them into third on goal difference.
Cardiff suffered an early setback as Mark Hudson scored an own goal against his former club.
The Bluebirds drew level before the break, Peter Whittingham grabbing his fifth goal in four games.

Blackpool moved into fifth with a 2-0 win over Plymouth.
The hosts went ahead when on-loan defender Marcel Seip grabbed the only goal of the first half against his parent club.
David Vaughan doubled the lead when he hit a shot into the top right of the goal from Ben Burgess.

Leicester stayed seventh after a 0-0 draw with Derby while Bristol City missed the chance to climb into the top six after a 1-1 draw with Peterborough.
The Robins were on the brink of victory after Cole Skuse scored a fine solo goal to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The Posh refused to lie down however with Shaun Batt and Danny Rose coming close before George Boyd headed home in the 90th minute from Rose's cross.
It was also Boyd's 124th consecutive appearance, equalling the club record.

QPR had an impressive 4-0 home win over Preston although the Lilywhites managed to stay in the play-off places.
Rangers took the lead when Adel Taarabt beat three men before curling a stunning shot into the top corner.
The hosts then doubled their lead when Akos Buzsaky successfully converted a penalty after Neil Mellor had fouled Taarabt.
On-loan Jay Simpson added a third when he drilled home a Buzsaky pass before Wayne Routledge scored from 25 yards.

Grant McCann scored twice as **** beat a disappointing Sheffield United 3-1 to earn their first league win in five games.
McCann's double - his first an imperious volley - and a Paul Hayes strike sealed the win for Nigel Adkins' men.
The Blades had drawn level just after the break when Ched Evans fired in a 20-yard free-kick as they dropped to 10th.

Sheffield Wednesday were in control against Coventry at Hillsborough. The Owls won 2-0 thanks to a Darren Purse header and Leon Clarke's penalty.

Barnsley claimed their third consecutive win as an Adam Hammill shot was enough to claim a 1-0 win at Doncaster.

Ipswich are still searching for their first win after a 1-1 draw with Swansea at Portman Road.
Craig Beattie fired the visitors ahead in the seventh minute with a fine drilled finish across debutant goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
But Pablo Counago equalised eight minutes later following good work from Jaime Peters

Ten-man Newcastle returned to the top of the Coca-Cola Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Doncaster at St James Park.
Chris Hughton, who is expected to be confirmed as Newcastle's permanent manager next week, saw his side avoid a third straight defeat despite falling behind to Dean Shiels' 18th-minute strike.
Andrew Carroll levelled for the Magpies after 67 minutes before Martin Woods missed a penalty for Doncaster 11 minutes later.
Zurab Khizanishvili's dismissal five minutes from time appeared to have ended Newcastle's hopes of victory but Kevin Nolan popped up with the winner in stoppage time.

Cardiff are a point behind the leaders thanks to an entertaining 4-3 victory at Sheffield United.
Jay Bothroyd put the visitors ahead in the 41st minute, but United hit straight back through Darius Henderson.
Cardiff went ahead through Peter Whittingham's penalty, but Henderson pegged them back again two minutes into stoppage time.
Whittingham then completed his hat-trick with goals in the 61st and 86th minutes, making James Harper's last-minute strike nothing more than a consolation for the Blades.

West Brom slipped from top to third as they could only manage a goalless draw at Coventry.

QPR came from two goals down to claim an impressive 4-2 victory over Derby at Pride Park and move into the play-off places.
Veterans Paul Dickov and Robbie Savage gave the Rams an early 2-0 lead in a game that Jim Magilton's Rangers controlled for long periods.
Adel Taarabt pulled a goal back before half-time and the former Tottenham player was a constant thorn in Derby's side as second-half goals from Gavin Mahon, Jay Simpson and a late Akos Buzsaky penalty sealed the points.

And Roy Keane failed to ease his troubles after his rock-bottom Ipswich side were held to a 1-1 draw by fellow strugglers Plymouth.
Town manager Keane is still looking for his first win of the season, and second-bottom Argyle took the lead at Home Park courtesy of a 20-yard thunderbolt from Carl Fletcher.
Ipswich were gifted an equaliser after 68 minutes when a poor back-pass from Gary Sawyer allowed Jon Stead to sneak in and score.
Darcy Blake was also dismissed for Plymouth late on but the visitors were unable to capitalise.

Peterborough climbed out of the bottom three with a 3-0 win over **** courtesy of goals from George Boyd (two) and Craig Mackail-Smith.

A last-gasp Billy Jones goal earned Preston a 2-2 draw at home to Middlesbrough.
Adam Johnson's 68th-minute goal looked to have done the job for Boro until Jones popped up in stoppage time.
Gary O'Neil had earlier fired the visitors in front with Paul Parry equalising for Preston.

Nottingham Forest were denied a sixth straight win with a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.
Darren Ambrose had opened the scoring for Palace but David McGoldrick levelled shortly after the restart.

Goals from Nicky Maynard, Evander Sno and Marvin Elliot gave Bristol City a 3-2 win at Barnsley.
Daniel Bogdanovic and Adam Hammill replied for the hosts, who also had Ryan Shotton sent off.

Swansea were held 0-0 by Blackpool at the Liberty Stadium.

Friday nights game

Matty Fryatt halted QPR's surge up the Coca-Cola Championship as fellow promotion hopefuls Leicester stole a march on the Londoners with a 2-1 victory at Loftus Road.
Adel Taarabt fired Rangers ahead just after the half-hour mark but, for once, the free-scoring hosts could not add to their tally and Fryatt's brace - the winner courtesy of a howler from home keeper Radek Cerny - secured City's third straight win and lifted them up to second, level on points with leaders Newcastle.

Ipswich finally broke their Championship duck as David Wright netted the winner in a 1-0 victory over Derby.
Roy Keane's side remain bottom despite their first victory of the season, achieved when Wright headed in on 66 minutes.

Plymouth and Reading stayed above the Tractor Boys with victories of their own.
Grzegorz Rasiak put the Royals ahead in the opening minute at Coventry and they did not look back in a 3-1 triumph.

Billy Davies' side move above Albion after stunning win at the Hawthorns By Neil Moxley Last updated at 11:53 Billy Davies's away-day specialists hammered out an emphatic message that they are ready to be taken seriously as genuine promotion contenders as they ruthlessly swatted aside West Bromwich.

Forest, on the back of a 17-game unbeaten run, extended that record with a powerful display at The Hawthorns. Dexter Blackstock's strike in the 18th minute allowed Forest breathing space before two stunning goals in the space of three minutes left home boss Roberto Di Matteo with a face as red as the visitors' shirts.
The Italian had not been overly impressed with Davies's tactic of deploying Blackstock as a lone striker before kick-off, claiming that most of West Bromwich's opponents had been set up defensively when they visited the Black Country.

The main story to come out of the results this week end is Cardiff manager Jones condemning the boo boys after last Saturdays draw at home to Blackpool. Rightly so, he points to Cardiff's position in league table, the financial stability of the club and where the club is going.

At the same time Derby manager Clough came out and said that the fans were right to boo the Rams after they capitulated to a 4 - 1 home defeat to lowly Scun.thorpe. He went on to say that the fans should boo the players if they aren't putting in the 9 yards. Very odd comments

Nottingham Forest piled the pressure on Coca-Cola Championship leaders Newcastle as they closed the gap to just two points.
A 2-1 home win over Reading eased second-placed Forest three points clear of West Brom, who head for St James' Park on Monday evening, although Billy Davies' side have now played two games more than both of their main promotion rivals.
The victory was secured by first-half strikes from Paul Anderson and Robert Earnshaw, although the home fans endured a tense final few moments after substitute Jimmy Kebe pulled one back for Liverpool's midweek FA Cup conquerors.

Swansea maintained their challenge with a 1-0 home victory over Leicester which saw the Foxes, who had started the day in fifth, drop out of the play-off places into seventh.
Gorka Pintado's lone 32nd-minute strike, his first since March last year, eased the Swans into fourth place as they leapfrogged Welsh rivals Cardiff.

The Bluebirds were heading for defeat at Scun.thorpe as a result of Michael O'Connor's early free-kick, but Peter Whittingham levelled with just eight minutes remaining to snatch a point.

Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan fielded all three of his new signings at Sheffield United, but former Celtic trio Barry Robson, Willo Flood and Chris Killen could not prevent the Teessiders from slipping to a seventh defeat in the 11 league games for which he has been in charge.

Newcastle 2-2 W.B.A

Peter Lovenkrands put his grief at the death of his father to one side for 90 minutes as Newcastle extended their lead at the top of the Championship to three points with a 2-2 draw against West Brom.
But the Magpies twice had to come from behind to prevent their fellow promotion challengers from becoming the first visiting side to win at St James' Park this season.
Jonas Olsson gave the Baggies a 13th-minute lead which was cancelled out 12 minutes later by Danny Guthrie's sweet free-kick.
Roman Bednar restored the visitors' lead within seconds of the restart, but Lovenkrands, who had flown back from Denmark for the game after being given compassionate leave to be with his family, levelled with a 54th-minute header to the delight of a crowd of 39,291
