Spitting

Postby locky801 » Sat Feb 20, 2010 6:51 pm

As the Subject says, this is about spitting. This seems to be a gross habit which we now see everyday. Recently I was watching my son play in a Primary school cricket match and was totally shocked in what I saw, most kids when fielding, about to bowl or even when batting were spitting. My lad was one as well and i spoke to him at length after the game about it. His answer was yes i knew i was doing it, but guys like Ponting and Clarke do it, and dad look at all the footballers that do it. He of course is right in what he says. Even 10 minutes ago i was watching cricket on Foxtel live and in 3 balls Brad Hodge spat 4 times with the camera well and truly focussed on him, I got from my son, see it's ok to do it because he played for Australia.

Question is, how do we stop kids, and I mean kids of Primary school age of doing this gross act, I threw the gaunlet down to my lad and told him if i see him do it whilst playing cricket or football i will head out onto the field and take him off and then take him home and ban him from playing. Surely the sportpersons of the world have a responsibilty here especially with the possible transfer of body fluids. I say sportspersons but then on 2nd thoughts cannot ever recall a woman playing sports spit anything like the men do.

Thoughts thanks???

Your son is right - they all do it :(

I went through this too with my boys.

I taught them is was a disgusting habit to have and how much I loathed it!
When they were growing up - if I saw someone do it I'd point it out and say how yuk it was.

Well that was fine, but my eldest son started doing this when he was 15/16 despite my disapproval.
And it's not always during sport because it just becomes a gross habit - and you see (mostly boys) doing it all the time.

Fortunately I've gotten inside the head of my 14 year old (Touch wood) and I have never seen him do it.
So there's hope.

I think it's gross :ymsick:

Sports field is a hell of a lot better than a shopping centre carpark or while crossing a main road as I have seen in the last two days

Well that's what I mean brod - it becomes 'habit' and these 'kids' just do it wherever and think it's acceptable behaviour.

Must admit that when I was able to watch the baseball on tv the constant spitting was the one thing I hated about it. I think some tv companies just don't give a stuff. I hardly ever see spitting when I watch the rugby union on tv. Now I'm sure they probably spit just as much as any other sportsperson but the BBC seem to be able to avoid showing it on camera so imho there's no reason why other shouldn't be able to as well.

I spit a lot while playing football. I get a big build up of saliva and its just easier to spit it out. I usually get a big mouthful of water, spit it out, and then have a drink. I dont spit any other time...but when on the footy field it should be ok in my opinion.

Ditto HH. Now that I've retired, I just don't spit. Running around a footy field, or playing cricket in the heat I had "oysters" building in my mouth. I needed to get rid of them, so I spat. As stated, now I have no need.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's when Benson and Hedges sponsored the cricket, and Escort sponsored the footy. I can't say that anything influenced me after all these years, given that I'm a "one off".

I should add, I've got no problem with my kid spitting whilst playing sport, as long as it's not directed at anyone (hello Glen McGrath!!!)

Exactly. I don't know if what is seen on TV is just spitting for the fun of it; I don't see how it would be anyway.

However, how many times did you see David Boon spit out his chewing gum after an innings? :)

I spit when I'm playing football. I'm just about the only one who does, though.

when your runny your back side off in a football game, it can tend to build up in your mouth when you dont get near the water boys for a drink. hence the spitting. I do it during footy games, but would never outside of it
