Birdman Rally.....

Post by A Mum »

So they are thinking about bringing this event back....

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/sout ... 5832566668

I never attended one of these events as I lived most of my childhood on Kangaroo Island,
but we absolutely loved watching it on TV and never missed it !!

Not to mention the catchy tune

It also mentions bringing back the milk carton regata which we loved as kids as well.

What's your thoughts?? (Being that often things trying to 'make a comeback' don't succeed)
Would our kids love it as much as we did??

For you older forumites did you ever 'participate' or know someone who did in it??

O:)
You get what you give....

We don't use enough milk cartons to build a boat - those big three litre bottles stuck together just wouldn't look right! Did enter the very last year it was on, the most fun you can have with your pants on!

I'd have a crack* at the birdman rally though, always loved watching it.

Would definitely love to se a return of these two events. Good, wholesome, cheap fun for everyone. I'm not sure how the youngsters would take it, with the distinctive "retro" feel of the events. But I reckon most people who saw the Birdman/Milk carton regatta when they were here before would be all for it.

Now all we have to do is knock down Holdfast Shores so we can see the beach as we drive down Anzac Highway and all will be back to the good old days.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

It's agreed then !
OK, who's got the demolition order? And who can get their hands on enough dynamite?
If someone can organise all the drinks, I'll bring the snacks and deck chairs.
Let's make it sunset tonight. Should make a stunning backdrop.
After the show we can all get together to pull down the 'Watermark' signs and write 'Lennies'
back up where it belongs. Then the first round is on me gentlemen.
Wonder what our next job should be ?

Wasn't the milk carton regatta reattempted a few years ago?

I think it'll be two great events that could make successful comebacks
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

Adelaide should never return to the days of black & white TV.

Nor should we go backwards to the days of "The Birdman Rally" or "The Milk Carton Regatta"..!

You all sound like a "Labour Government" :D
Smile :)

It's only Money $$$ :)

What is happening to our SANFL guys...

They didn't really consider public liability back then. It'd never get off the ground so to speak.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

OMG I have very fond memories of the Birdman Rallys mid eightees.. iirc held on Australia Day and used to have a Beachgirl Competition on the foreshore with a band playing after... then they bought in the dry zone which really dampened things - wonder how they would go now with increasing liabiility issues etc 'cause gee there was some far stacks off the jetty, soo soo funny \:D/

I was in the Birdman Rally in 1986! Entered on the spur of the moment then ignored it until the day before. Hurridly made a "Plane" from a foam esky, a cardboard box and some wine cask inners. Looked a treat! Billy J Smith (from Its a Knockout fame!) was the Mc. I "flew" (plumetted) 8 metres off Glenelg jetty in front of 60000 people, hit the bottom, cut my foot and had to swim to shore as the rescue boat was busy fishing a hanglider out. Made the TV coverage and was Mr Popularity at school.

Would do it again in a heartbeat

They re-introduced the bridman rally to the Melbourne Moomba festival a few years ago, and I think, it is a raging success.
