International Credit Transactions

Postby Zelezny Chucks » Thu Mar 04, 2010 10:30 am

Morning all,

I am currently having some trouble paying a deposit for some accomodation in South Africa for the World Cup. Looking to pay by credit card and have received the bank details, route code and SWIFT code?

I have scoured bank sites for some help with this and due to work have found it hard to contact my bank, they're incredibly good at not being accessible.

Anyone got any info into this, it would be greatly appreciated as, as you can imagine, accomodation is as scarce as hens teeth over there at that time!

Thanks.

P.S. If you know anyone who might be heading over but doesn't have tickets to the Aussie games drop us a PM.

I used to work in Internet Banking
See what I can remember...
The bank details, route code and SWIFT code are used for international payments from your bank account to theirs, not via credit card.
For this you would generally need to be set up for internet banking and be able to make 3rd party payments online
Not all banks will allow international transfers
You CAN do it at a branch though, quite expensive IIRC

Surely there is an easier option though...

What you can do is if you have their bank details, address etc is send a wire. This is doing a direct debit into their account using a foreign currency. You can send a wire in ZAR to the nominated account. The fee to do such is $25 (IIRC) and you pay in AUD and it gets converted to ZAR and banked.

The other option is to send a draft, which is a little easier. A draft is a Foreign Currency cheque. This can be done in ZAR too. Same cost of $25 AUD to get this done. You then post the cheque over to the person you wish to pay.

Travelex do both of these things if your bank doesn't.

ANZ bank does those things as mentioned by SJABC.

And having work in ANZ and done many, many, many of these (painful things...lol)
IMO a telegraphic transfer (wire) is the quickest best (trackable) option.

Thanks for the help guys and Mum.

Seems like Travelex may be the way to go here as time is of the essence, who'd have thought the banks would slug you fees.
