The future of the OBahn?

Postby Sojourner » Wed Mar 10, 2010 1:20 pm

In recent times we have heard plenty of news about Tram Extentions, yet news on the OBahn seems to be much slower. Using Federal Government funding the OBahn is to be extended in the city end of the track to have exclusive lanes and quick access through the parklands, yet no news seems forthcoming on what Labor intend to do on the other end of the OBahn in terms of an extention?

Boarding the OBahn at TTP sees you in the city in less than 12 minutes depending on how much traffic the driver has to get through once they arrive by the old C7 studios, a good run and you can be from TTP to the middle of the city in 9 minutes which suggests that if it were further extended then a lot more people would have the benefit of quality and efficent public transport.

Being an election, the Greens, Family First and the Libs are all suggesting they are in favor of an extension, yet none of them seem to have any actual plan of what they would do to put forward aside from vague references that it should probably go through to Golden Grove Shopping Centre in the first stage.

I would like to see the Obahn go through to Golden Grove, then on to the Lyall Mac Hospital, through Elizabeth and Salisbury then on to the new low cost housing development planned for the Buckland Park area to provide rapid transport to low income earners who are trying to pay off homes of their own in the outers suburbs and make it so they can access jobs in Elizabeth, Modbury or the City with relative ease.

Depending on which way you look at it, when the train line is upgraded (from broad gauge to standard gauge and electrified) the tram will then also utilise that section of tram line untill it leaves on it's own tracks agian to go to Grange, West Lakes and Semaphore, a lot cheaper option than putting in a tram only track near the train line

I am going to talk about public transport in Melbourne for a minute. We have Trams, Trains and busses. We haven't gone real far with most of this and the most recent line was out to Craigieburn. but was have plenty of places where trams run alongside and near trains and it works. Adelaide had a top Tram and Train network in the 50's and got rid of most of it. Melbourne just hasn't updated from the 50's. Adelaide should have kept their tram network and worked on keeping the train network but it didn't. Trams are awesome to catch I enjoy catching a tram around Melbourne if I can.

Many people in governments seem to feel that trams are the go and trains are not.

Look at a 3 car train pulling out of Adelaide station in peak hour and realize that that train is carrying 8-10 tram loads of passengers and 20-25 bus loads of passengers -- lot of unnecessary movements on the roads I would think?

Perhaps the answer should be trains in the peak and trams off peak - either way tunnel vision in my opinion

Personally I would prefer obahn to tram given its flexibility however that is another story. :D

Melbourne built the city loop in the 70s-80s, thats a fair upgrade. Additional tracks to Footscray and Box Hill, extensions to Laverton, Watergardens are some more examples of upgrades. The trams are only any good if going short distances otherwise they take too long.

One of Steve Bracks classic Labor election promises, was to extend the trams up Burwood Highway to link up with the train at Upper Ferntree Gully.
It never got past Wantirna South, and Knox City Shopping Centre...

I think every govt for the last 20 years promised that, at least he built that bit (from Blackburn to Vermont South).

Don't have a prolem with a party as such, but I have a problem with stupidity, if one side displays more then the other so be it. Its not exclusive, the one way Southern Expressway was one of the dumbest things of all time in the state's history, that was a Liberal stuff up.

The city loop was a good upgrade over used is my feeling on it. Watergardens what a joke it should have gone all the way to sunbury. The Laverton extention is a single line track not double single and with the new plan that is comming in will help the werribee line. Footscray and box hill were needed so that really is different situation but footscray should have each tracks joining the others not werribee and sunshine on different tracks.

Here's a youtube clip for a trip on the underground part of the city loop - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpv9gA4O9dI

I know it's sounds daring for Adelaide, but perhaps an undeground city loop could be built in the City - it'll never happen though because the Advertiser will beat it up as a bus route to nowhere :(

Damn, should have thought of it a few months ago we could have had a political party for it - if there's a Gamers4Croydon then surely we can have a Cityloop4Adelaide party!
