Deceiving ??

I saw this story on today tonight last night - and now I see there's an article on it.

I find this pretty misleading/deceiving tactics and don't think it should be allowed,
but it does seem that anything is 'go' in politics.

There were a lot of new/inexperienced voters around on Saturday -
and I think the labor party 'dressing up' as 'Family First' and handing out how to vote cards is very deceiving and dishonest

I'm sure a trend will start here - it's just not cricket in my eyes !

What do others think?

Yes, election tactics are littered with examples of this sort of deceptive practice.

It's not currently illegal, but I suspect it soon will be.

I saw that one of the Labor candidates refused to do it - cant remember who - maybe Chloe Fox

in quite large bold font at bottom of the pamphlet was 'PREFERENCE LABOR' and an endorsment by Labor. If people were stupid enough to not see that. Shame on them.

Libs did the same thing here (in this electorate anyway) with the Greens at the 2004 election.

It was dodgy as hell and should be fully looked into.

It has been deemed legit in a legal sense.

A solution I'd like the SA Electoral Commission to take up is to ban handing out how to vote cards outside polling booths. While we're at at, ban all election advertising within 200 metres of the entrance.

Allow how to vote cards to be placed inside each polling booth in a standard format dictated and managed by the Electoral Commission.

This would save huge amounts of money for the political parties, stop the hassling of voters entering a polling booth, and allow voters the opportunity to vote as per the wishes of the party of their choice if they are so inclined.

But of course it will never happen.

Totally agree that it should be regulated then I dont have to get up at 6.30am to go to some polling booth with a hangover

But, I do mean it, have a bookcase type aparatus that the punter can choose what they want

Pretty trivial after the Jackie Kelly racial stuff 3 years ago..................This was an improvement in political standards from that effort.

I hope family first do make a formal complaint whether its "legal" or not, its openly deceptive and should result in the candidates involved being stood down until an investagation and reccomendation has been made over the practice.

Surely they can pick out those votes that went in line with the false how to vote cards and then work out what would have happened if the preference had gone to the Liberals.

If there's no change to the final result then move on, but change the rules for next time. Some are talking about a by-election but I don't see that the cost is justified unless there's evidence that the result would have changed (see first paragraph).

How to vote cards should be clear as to which party produced them and I don't think the tactic is in the spirit of democracy. Whether it's as big a deal in this case as is being made out I'm not sure. I assume there was a Family First rep handing out their own how to vote cards as well.

Bignell was defending this on radio this morning saying that the actions did not influence the result. However, if that was the case, why the need to do it in the first place?

If they can only dig out 500 votes that went 1-2 FF, Labor and he won by 3000 votes then it didn't influence the result so he's right. That doesn't make it morally right IMO. But, at the same time, it doesn't warrant a by-election.

The other factor is that the tactic was out in the media by mid-morning on Saturday so did they stop doing it after that?
