People have been spoilt the past few years watching 300 plus runs on the 1st day. A few years ago, 300 was unheard of as teams would consolidate their positions on the first day.
Yesterday, England knew they had to bat for 5 sessions and they would have set out not wanting to lose more that 3-4 wickets in the day. They did this, and more power to them. If Pieterson and Flintoff get off to fliers today, they will be 500 plus by Tea today which would be a more than satisfactory result.
Good day of real old fashioned Test Cricket. England won Day 1 and the Aussies will need to dig deep from here.
