I see Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate lambasted Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo for what he considered a blatant dive to earn a penalty against his side on Saturday.

It's not the first time Ronaldo has been accused of this and I think it's time for the game to take this problem by the scruff of the neck.

Every time a player goes down in the box and cries 'Penalty' the ref should call on a 'video referee' (where available) where close up inspection will reveal whether the player going to ground was the result of a genuine foul or pure theatrics. If it is the latter, the 'actor' should be sent from the field for an early shower.

Diving has become such a blight on the game that drastic action is required to irrefutably expose the cheats and make an example of them.

Agree 100% WOF. Its a real shame the FA doesnt do something about this. They say they want the keep technology out of the game, but with the amount of money involved these days it seems irresponsible not to have the correct decision made! could cost a side a champions league spot or even the premiership. Seems funny that they will stop the game for a fake injury where a player gets stretchered off only to run back onto ground within seconds of being taken off, but they are unwilling to stop the game to ensure the correct decision is made!!

Yep I gotta agree with this with one exception ... Diving has always been a problem (or at least for the last 25 years), it's just that now they've got the technology to prove it!

I love the game, but the diving pisses me off no end, and can anyone tell me why when a player goes to ground due to contact with his leg(s) (which is about %70 of the time) he clutches his face??

Its always amused me that the game when the players dive and pretend they've been shot and carry on at the slightest touch is watched by supporters who start riots and are as violent as they come. Ive always tried to work out if there was some sort of inverse forumula there but it all came apart when no fights broke out in the stands of chess tournaments.

Interesting thought ... If you look at footy, rubgy etc, much tougher, physical sports yet you don't hear of the agro in the crowds or the rioting you associate with Soccer.

Perhaps more to do with the affordability and subsequent accessibility to the sport harking back to it's origins??

Yeah, my theory also falls over with Rugby League if Cantebury are playing. No trouble in probably the most violent sport in NFL too.
Not aware of any fights in the crowd at bull fighting either.

I think it all comes down to which sports/clubs attract those people who have "gang philosophies" mixed with a bad element.
