Scorpion wrote:How much does something like this cost? With no private health cover....?
$2,800.00 with Private Health and around $18,000.00 with no private. They advised they don't normally do it if you don't have private, due to insurance issues etc. Better off getting private health for a year and then having it done.
It is being done for public patients at Flinders Medical Centre if they meet their criteria. I know one person who had it done there last year.
Ashford don't do it. When they did, it was up to two year waiting list, so that being the case, you would be mad not to get private health for a year and then have the op. you would still get it done quicker and also save yourself $13k
So you've seen everything have you? Yep Have you ever seen a man eat his own head? No Well you haven't seen everything then have you.
I have a very close relative who had Lap Band surgery 3 years ago. She tried everything to lose weight ( diets, gym, walking every evening etc etc ) & nothing would work. Lap Band was a last resort. It is the best thing she ever did for her health. Lost the weight she wanted & feels much better mentally & physically. It took quite a few months to get the adjustment of the band right ( losing the weight at the right rate & then adjusting it to keep it where you want it ). She can't eat breads or red meat, but I think that is about all that has changed , apart from that it takes her a while to eat a plate of food. So get used to eating your meals cold. Good luck with it BC, I am sure it will get you the desired results.
Good luck then mate . Fingers crossed for you . I'll still be popping my pills(that sounds wrong ) and getting thinner that way. So we soon will be two thin dudes Or in my case from heavyweight to cruiser weight

Well, just thought I'd give you an update. Had the op on monday and all going well so far. Little bit of pain in the guts but nothing too major. Two weeks of soup and then another two weeks of viatmised stew etc and then I can start eating normal food again. I had to go on the Optifast diest wo weeks before the op, to shrink my liver by half, as they needed to operate around it, so have lost 9 kilo's in two weeks. Since the op, i have eaten two small tubs of jelly and a little bit of pumpkin soup, so the weight should start coming off soon hopefully.

Each to their own I reckon. My Mum has lost 45 kilos, My two cousins 40 kilos each and a chick from work 50 kilos by the lap band surgery. Due to rapid loss in rapid time, they all have issues with excess skin and look quite saggy, skin wise. Neither of them incorporated exercise either. I have lost 42kilos over 18 months naturally through sensible eating and am thankfully im not having too many probs with the skin, mind you 3k walk, 400m swim each night with occasion zumba thrown in, probably doesn't hurt imho lap band surgery works, for sure, but Im not too sure it is actually teaching the person the right way to eat and be healthy .. interesting thread ... good luck bc
RIP my DH 1964 - 2009 - You were one of the best and I miss you
BC has planned for the extra skin by getting the op in winter. The skin will be used as an extra rug at night or a handy shelter from the rain at the footy.

I won't have excess skin you tosser. That only happens to the morbidly obese. I wouldn't have had the op if that was the case.

Sorry BC, it might not be true, but it's bloody funny.

Congratulations Lunchcutter I agree it needs to be a change you can live with and one that works every day. I have not found the answer with diet or exercise. I spend over an hour a day on shank’s pony to try to help but 20 years ago the same distance was half the time! (I do spend over 10 hours each day on my arse though) At no stage since destroying the knee have I be able to stop the increase in weight. I suppose the worry is when will it eventually “kill me”?

this will sound weird from a fatty with a bad knee .But have you had blood tests to see if you are deficient in any thing .I know I was found lacking in vitamin D started taking it and the energy returned . Not to mention the metformin lol. Also perhaps cut down or out spuds from your meals .Helped me as well. And I spend 8 to 10 hours a day on my feet!! Doesn't stop u getting fat by the way.

All three went great guns at first - lost all the weight they wanted.
1 - 10 years down the track - all weight back on. 2 - 8 years down the track - most weight back on. 3 - 4 years down the track - nearly all weight back on.
I think that if you have it done - great will power still comes into it for the rest of your life. It's definitley no quick fix or 'easy way out' as some of your friends have put it.
Came to post something similar. I had a PT client who was really battling so she went down that path. Today she's bigger than ever and would easily be topping 140kg. Great chick but there's something wrong in her head and that's where it all is if you're overweight.
If your subconscious wants you to be fat then you will be. Will power is only a small part of it, you can consciously modify your eating program and almost everyone knows what's good and bad but if your body and subconscious have decided that your safer being fat then trying to restrict what you eat is like telling yourself to breathe less. Sure you can do that for a short time but try it long term.
Lap bands are such a violent and intrusive way of getting the weight off.

This is good advice as well, another reason that you can end up overweight is that your body is starved of some nutrients and wants to be continuously fed in the hope of getting what is missing, but it doesnt and the excess calories are stored.
Spuds are OK though, it depends how they're cooked.

Not if you are diagnosed with glucose intolerance. That was one food I was advised to go with out .Once I stopped eating them feeling bloated after eating my evening meal disappeared. Mind you when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I was told u can eat small amounts of spuds. Just for me I'm not eating them .My 2 cents worth.

I wasn't criticising you bum crack .It wasn't offered to me .I would have jumped at lap band surgery or having my mouth wired up (would help me at footy games ).would have beat the hell out of surgeons telling me your obese lose weight now !!! and not telling me what I should weigh .
When we (well u will for sure fingers crossed for me ) we should say g'day at the footy .
