5/5

The Mawson Lakes Football Club headed to the picturesque Webb Oval on Saturday to take on fellow Top 3 side Glenunga. The Glenunga Rams had won their past 4 games and were to be a true test for the undefeated Saints. With both clubs boasting top line players it was interesting to note Saints Skipper Lachlan Kennett line up on Glenunga Coach Chad Bourke deep in the Rams Forward Line. However it was the Rams onball brigade of Dale Treloar and Shane Selway who were the stars early for the home side. Matthew Apostolopoulos might have a 'Round Ball' surname, but he too was finding plenty of it and was using the footy with precision. The Saints were down by a small margin at 1/4 time, but with Glenunga's tall forward Tim Mitchell dominant and Mark Roberts converting up front, the margin expanded to 5 majors by the long break. Anyone at the game, could have been forgiven that the contest was over, such was the home team's dominance and the fact Mawson Lakes had scored only 2 goals in a half of footy. Recent History had suggested that the Saints 3rd quaters had been their best for the year, and this was to happen yet again. Rob O'Gorman who had made some uncharacteristic 'Clangers' in the first half, started dominating the pivot. Kennett had forced to Bourke into the Midfield and he too was chalking up possessions, while keeping his minder very quiet. This resulted in more opportunities for a starved Saints Forward Line, and they took all they could get. Ivan Novosel bagged a couple as did veteran Steve Elmendorp, but the biggest influence was that of CHF Todd Martin who had come off the bench. Martin was using his strong frame to clear packs for his pacey team mates, while pulling in the odd contested mark. With a stunning turn around, the Saints hit the last period 2 goals ahead, and pulled away to a comfortable 31 point win. Coach Geoff Riddle would have been pleased with his moves, which included regular ruckman Myles Cooper onto the dangerous Mitchell, throwing quiet starter Mark Chilvers into the Ruck, Kennett curtailed Bourke, while the move of Martin was the best of them all. Glenunga will no doubt be thereabouts this season, with their tall units expected to cause team difficulties this season, particularly on their small home oval. The Rams will be finalists in 2010 and in serious contention of the prized double chance. Mawson Lakes were very happy with the comeback, but will have to switched on for 4 quaters if they are to topple fellow undefeated side Adelaide University this week.

Side Note: Surely the Sunday Mail can spare the Div 7 followers a 3cm X 2cm ladder each week? I've just read about 300 paragraphs on some girl who sailed around the world.

This weekend was a great weekend with two great games between the Rams & Saints, it was a good chance to see where both teams were at against the inform Saints team.

From a B grade view - We let the saints out to an early start and were very lucky that they didn't convert all of their shots otherwise they would have blown us out of the water very early in the game. However after half time we only lost the half by a goal. Which for us is encouraging that we can keep up with a top 3 teams if we put our mind to it, its just a matter of putting together a 4 quarter effort. After Half time i thought it was a good game between two sides, with Mawson's having the bigger bodies being the big difference in the end and was a good physical hit out. Even though we lost I believe we will be better for it.

A Grade - I missed alot of the first half and from what I saw of the second half I can understand why the are considered early favorites for the flag especially with Novosel and "Glove Man" roaming around goals.

Thanks goes to the Mawson Lakes players, as lot of them hung around after the game and came into the club rooms for a beer or two, it was good to see and I think more teams should it.

P.S - Can you let us know what happens with the guy who got red carded ?

Was a very good comeback by you blokes. 8 goals was never going to be enough for us to get over the line. Felt as though everyone for us fell asleep during the second half. Was a very big learning curve for us and will surely get better because of it. Well done Mawson Lakes on a fantastic second half and a great comeback win. Will be looking forward to the next time we meet!

Amen to that Andy. Well played in the 2nd half Lakers, no question there. Perhaps we got ahead of ourselves, perhaps we lack fitness. Either way, rest assured, we'll learn from it.

that is a stupid comment.

I think you will find that the Div 7 comp is alot more competitive then last year no easy games. Athelstone C grade is coping with huge changes every week and struggling to get there best team out on the park. you will also find tey have lost 2 games by less then a kick.

the D grade has pretty much the same team a few of the under 18 boys from last year who have started training late are playing at the moment.

  I know Travis definately thought about CU, and my source told me that he was almost certain to sign before Greenacres gave him a call.. Doesnt really matter anyway.

Was certain until he got told there was no coin.

dont know why teams are paying for him. never made the best players or got a b&f vote in 2 years at two wells

I've got a serious question to ask...Is sledging your opponent (without swearing) a free kick against you?

Only ask because one of our lads got done on the weekend for giving his man a bit of niggle (ie. pushing & shoving, telling him he's no good etc.) without swearing at him and the ump pulled a free kick out of it off the ball. The umpire said to him "you can't speak to him like that"...is this seriously a rule? :?

Pushing and Shoving can be a free kick for Rough Conduct but telling your opponent that they cant play is not a free kick its just an umpire trying to get in the game, obviously hadn't blown his whistle for a minute or two

Ive been told that on a regular basis but have never got a free kick for it, just proves that the umpires must agree with my opponent.

He copped a 1 week suspension. Big blow heading into the top of the table clash...I didn't think it was worthy of a ban but either way he's let himself plus the team down.
