All Departures and Arrivals for 2006

All discussions to do with the SANFL

So far we have gained 4 players and lost 8 so far. Brown, Funcke, Morrison, Mathews, Francis, Che C-C, Butler and Bamford.

Brown would have been our 2nd highest paid player, Funcke would have been high up as well and Che, Morrison and Butler would have been reasonably paid as well.

I think we have 10 AFL players on our list. South had 12 last year. It is possible we are over, but you never know. Of those, guys like Waterhosue and Poulton may be playing for less money than expected. Waterhosue may be a big name, former no.1 draft pick etc. but his last 3-4 years of his AFL career was spent injured, he wanted to come back to Adelaide anyway and he is 30. He could easily be playing for less money than you would think. Poulton similar. I doubt Meiklejohn is on much.

Paycuts? Davis can be one. In fact I'd like to pass a motion that he play for free.

What is the actual Salary Cap limit anyway?

Waterhouse is very well paid, rumour has it he gave his price to his preferred club last year but they refused to pay the money he was asking.

Good try, macca, but all those players except Brown and perhaps Funcke would have been paid peanuts.

The cap is $305,000, including sign-on fees. The other clubs haven't been able to match Port's cash offers. The likes of Clayton, Bullen, Alvey, etc would be on way over $30K.

Do the sums again and it will be obvious that the only way Port aren't mega-dollars over the cap is if they think they have worked out a back-door method to get around it.

If they have, the SANFL will have to look closely at stopping the loopholes.

The SANFL salary cap is a joke. The SANFL investigations officer (John Condon) does not have the same rights to investigate SANFL players bank accounts and other financial sources as the AFL's investigations officer. This mickey mouse approach is known by all clubs so there is no incentive to stop flaunting the S. Cap. At one SANFL club's AGM, members asked the board to cheat on the S. Cap but when there are members from that club on the S. Cap review committee it makes it very awkward. Members were also told that recently delisted AFL players were demanding between $70,000 - $80,000 a year.

It's about time the SANFL raised the S. Cap and put more vigorous efforts into catching the cheats.

Good guys run last, or nearly last (this excludes South Adelaide), or just don't win premierships.

We'll, we will just have to wait a couple of years to find out. This coming season wont be investigated till at least the year after, so we'll have to wait to find out.

I'd be dissapointed if we are deliberately miles over the cap

Holden78, your previous post reads 'Eagles have gained bolton from geelong and westbrook for 2 more years and tuckey from south signed to play in 2007 hes playing in southport in 2006'

So do you mean in this post that Tuckey will play with Southport in 2006 then play for the Eagles in 2007 or do you mean he will be playing with South Adelaide in 2007 ?

I don't think anyone should hold their breath waiting for Tuckey. He's just another drifter who'll go anywhere the wind blows the scent of money up his nostrils.

Expect to add a whole heap of names to the departures for South. From what I've heard from a player is that 15 of the top 25 players from last season have said they're leaving. Also, there is a lot of feeling from former board members that a lot of it has to do with Pyman, hence the action to form another ticket to get a few new people on the board with the ambition of terminating Pyman's contract, or to at least rectify the feeling that most players are leaving because of him.
