Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Lyle Skinner was very good player gave his all for the Dogs.

Geoff Clark (Can't remember)

Paul Bagshaw one of the most coolest players you will ever see. Should have won a Magaery Medal and an All Australian.

Would have done well in the VFL if played in a decent team might have struggled a bit in a lesser team.

Interesting side light. None of possibly South Australia's 3 greatest players of the 60-70's era won an All Australian Selection

Russell Ebert, Barrie Robran & Paul Bagshaw
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Bagshaw would have been brilliant in any team he played and in any state comp back then so for you to say he would have struggle a bit in a lesser team is a tad insultating IMHO.

I have mentioned it before but I never thought Baggy could have ever won a Magarey Medal because when Sturt played a game against a lowly side Baggy seemed to just enjoy the stroll. For much of his early career, Sturt vs North games were of high importance and quality and Baggy often performed brilliantly. From 1974 until his retirement North were no longer competitive and Baggy seemingly spent the whole afternoon leaning on the behind post. Woodville supporting mates told me that is how he often spent his games against Woodville as well.

Having said that he was b.o.g. in three premierships therefore I reckon he would have been O.K. in Melbourne irrespective of the team he played for.

Those who can remember - how did Bagshaw go in state games against Victoria and WA?

Geoff Clark, was he injured in 1978 ?

Geoff Clark played 15 reserves games and booted 35 goals, mainly at CHF. He couldn't swing a regular game in the League team due to the depth of talent at the club.

He was a smooth moving player with sound skills. Although he made little "impact" in 1978, in 2007 he was dismissed as ATSIC Chairman, being found guilty of taking part in 2 pack rapes of Carol Stingel in 1971.

Not great, but didn't look interested. Sydney Jackson took him to the cleaners in a state game once in Western Australia and he wasn't chosen for a long time after that. He didn't seem to play that many state games, I was actually surprised to see that he palyed 14.

I'd prefer to judge him on his Grand Final performances. As I said before, if they were awarding Jack Oatey medals in the 1960s, he would have won three of them. I think the three years where he was considered best on the ground were 1968, 1969 and 1970, although Malcolm Greenslade with nine goals in 1969 and six goals in the mud in 1970 must have run him close both times.

MAL Greenslade kicked 9 goals in a SANFL Grand Final
Would that be a record number of goals for ST in a g/f ?
What is the most SANFL Goals in a Grand Final ?

Paul Bagshaw must have played an exceptional game to get B.O.G. in front of a 9 goal performance
I consider 9 goals in a G/f to be quite freakish
Unless he was spoon fed by that dynamic Sturt team

A fellow by the name of Gordon Green also kicked 9 for Sturt in 1932.

Yes, I think that maybe 68 & 70, I'd have Baggy as B.O.G., but 9 goals in a GF is a bit hard to beat. I'd have Greenslade B.O.G. in 69. A few in the media opted for Tilbrook.

Yeah it's an interesting fact but ultimately meaningless in someways. The only way you could get All Australian was if you were picked in the side that was named after a carnival series. Robran played in 2 (69 & 72) and Bagshaw in 3 - if I'm not mistaken - (66.69.72) and from memory SA hardly excelled in those series making selection hard. In fact I would think WA had twice (at least) the amount of All Australians that SA had in that time.

MAY 20
ROUND 8

WV 14-20 PA 11-13
NW 15-20 WA 7-9
GL 18-17 CD 15-11
ST 21-25 WT 10-15
NA 20-15 SA 16-16

A historic day for the Woodville football club
It was thier first ever win at Alberton Oval, since being incepted in 1964

MAY 20
Woodville sign up Swan Districts rover Brian Close
Close 25 has played 84 games in Perth
Maybe his signing inspired Woodville at Alberton on the same day !!!
Close was subsequently leased to Woodville a few days later for the rest of the season

MAY 23
Spooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooofer drops a bombshell
Milan Faletic [WT] announced he wanted to play for PA after a 151 game career for the Eagles, and 1 state game

MAY 25
Brian Adamson took out an order in the Federal Court against his club West Perth to show cause why he was unable to play for NW under the Trade Practices Act

MAY 26
Woodville won a clearance for Rod Brown
Brown from Swan Districts had played 86 games in the west

Woodville also obtained a clearance for Ray Mildenhall
Mildenall was from the now defunct Footscray club

Woodville released ruckman Jim Brenton to Perth

WOODVILLE
Very active with player transfers in 1978, and particulary this period in late May
All the $$$ I spent at the club was going to good use !
It was around this time that the Peckers Disco was on Thursday nights as well, and a few more $$$ spent by me
CLOSE [14]
BROWN [8]
MILDENHALL [6]
How did these 3 recruits play ?
Perhaps the knowledge of 3 recruits coming over motivated some of the players to play well against PA ?

PORT ADELAIDE
As mentioned Woodville broke a 14 year hoodoo winning at Alberton
Also mentioned on 16/2 was that SA beat PA in a NFL game, thier first win in 10 years v PA
That being the case when did SA next beat PA ?
PA beat SA another 2 times this season, so the answer will be 1979 and onwards

South played in the grand final in '79 so does anyone have any information on whether the Panthers beat Port that year?

I remember the long goal Darren Harris kicked at Adelaide Oval after the siren (83 or 84?) but I'm presuming they beat Port before that..

Woodville's win in 1978 was their only victory at Alberton in their 27 year history.

South beat Port at Adelaide Oval in 1979 with Andy Bennett dominant. Barrie Robran, who coached North in 1979 was adamant that South were the best side in the league and if there had been fine conditions Grand Final day in 1979 South would have won and won well. Of course you have to play the game regardless of the conditions.

Also Mal, you refer to the now defunct Footscray Football Club. Footscray aren't defunct they just changed their name. It would be like saying the now defunct Brian Harris who is now Brian Lake.

A magnificent job by Russell Hutton that day in blanketing Russell Ebert.

I distinctly remember being in the change rooms after the game and seeing Mike Coward, his glass eye twinkling in the makeshift lighting, interviewing a towel clad Lindsay Heaven.

Brian Close turned out to be an excellent recruit.

1978 actually ended up being the lowest scoring season between 1972 and 1988. 54.63 scoring shots on average per match.
That is still a whopping 13.09 scoring shots more per match than last season, and even 0.35 more per match than the highest scoring season of the past 15 years, 2006.

From 1966 to 1972, SA had 10 All Australians and WA 17. The Victorians had 30, and the list reads like a "who's who" of Australian Rules Football, some of the greatest players of all time.

There's no mystery that Ebert, Robran & Bagshaw never made AA, there simply were 20 better performed players in each carnival. Teams were selected on performance, not ability.

I was interested to read the info in response to my question re how Bagshaw went in state games....now I'm curious about any opinions on how Robran (and perhaps Ebert as well although I can remember a few of his state games in the 80's) went against Victoria and WA (his serious injury obviously affected his state career). There was the famous incident with Jesaulenko applauding Robran although I believe that was in the NA v Carlton game in '72 and not the state game..??

Robran played OK in state games but didn't have too many great games. I always thought that he was played out of position in state games. As a young player he was played on the wing a position he never played for North and later on he played Centre Half Forward. Invariably the opposition would play two players on him to negate him. I always wished that he be given a chance in the centre but he never was. Once early in his career at the MCG, Robran played on the wing and Sticks Phillips in the middle. I loved Sticks Phillips but that was ridiculous.

Ebert too rarely seemed to play as well in state games as he did in the SANFL. Brian Peake seemed to have his measure when we played the West.

Robranisgod is correct almost (even if he is the foremost Robran expert in OZ!). Barrie's best State games IMO were when All-Australian selection was not counted or in the mix. His first game against the VIC's he was considered by most to be SA's best player having had to play on the wing against Hawthorn veteran Des Meagher - both clocked up impressive stats if my memory serves me correctly.

Also the point re him being played out of position was well illustrated in the game in 71 or 72 at the AO (I think Jezza kicked 10 that day and SA lost by 4 points). Barrie had a quiet (by his standards) 1st half playing at CHF but he was switched to "on the ball" in the second and ended up rucking as even though he was strictly supposed to be ruck-rover / follower and he dominated in that half and dragged SA right back into the game.
