The Way It Was Videos

Postby LBJ8 » Thu Mar 01, 2007 7:31 pm

Just wondering if anybody has any of these videos, i'd be interested in borrowing them and making some DVDs. If anyone is willing to lend some to me that would be great. I can pay for the freight to get them and send em back...and i'll give you a copy of the DVDs obviously....

The SANFL or whoever has the rights to these videos (+ the SANFL grand finals) need to get them released properly on DVD I reckon

And they should be selling them too, instead of locking them away and saying "oh we have the rights to them etc."

It's not as if they'll lose any money if people copy the videos - they don't sell them anymore to begin with!

I can't remember the fully story but I can find out. As I recall, the rights are not owned by the SANFL, but in fact owned by a private concern who for some reason want to keep them locked away, and not for public consumption. I guess it's like people who purchase valuable works of art and keep them locked in a vault rather than display them in a museum.

Same deal goes there - it's not as if any money is lost by others copying the videoes! :)

Difference being, artwork is individual.
You can't lock away 100 copies of Brett Whiteley's Alchemy..

Maybe someone should look in to finding out WHO has the rights.

(and who has WHAT rights)

This has been raised before.
A couple of years ago I wandered into VideosDirect2U and asked about SANFL on DVD.
I was told that they have the rights prior to the ABC's coverage (from 1991).

There was supposed to be a DVD authoring company that was going to produce DVDs for VideosDirect2U, but for whatever reason, this has still not happened.

Are they called the Video Warehouse now? Perhaps someone working close to the shop can follow this up?

That aside, if the SANFL had the rights and have sold them, then the owner has a perfect right to do as they please with them.

I'd need to speak with someone to get the facts (because I heard the story years ago and can't remember the details), but I recall mention of the entire 1964 GF, among other games, being locked in a vault by the rightful owner and the SANFL being powerless to do anything about it.

There is an emerging black market for SANFL Videos/DVD with a lot of poor quality rip-offs doing the rounds (some were being sold on Ebay for excessive prices), so if the SANFL retain any rights over these old games (or any power to influence this mysterious owner of the rights) then they should make a priority of getting the SANFL product released properly on DVD. I am sure it would turn a small profit for them as well. They must be available somewhere because shows like Simply Footy seem able to turn up old highlights with good reproduction quality. A couple of the SANFL clubs sell copies of their past grand final wins but even these are average quality DVDs made from someone's VHS copy made on the day of the game. Still not the real deal.

Hopefully the SANFL monitor this site and take the hint. You can buy every VFL/AFL grand final from 1960 or so yet the SANFL remains the domain of fading VHS and poor DVD rip-offs.

And he's getting back to me as to who owns the rights.

They were owned by PROIMAGE (You'd see their logo at the start of the tapes) who went under.
Then Videosdirect2U took over the rights as they came up.

Last year, VideosDirect2U became defunct.

So, who owns the rights... ??

That's what I'm trying to find out.
