Why would you believe any politician when discussing strategy and policy?

not the correct topic but probably doesnt need its own thread -

This morning the Families minister has said "She could live on the dole". Ok, remove all her payments, and make her go on the dole for a month, then come back with another view?

Macklin's an imbecile. I remember when Labor were pumping up their welfare quarantining stuff (sorry 'income management') expanding it across the country, she put out a press release accusing Abbott of copying their policy and basically not being tough enough on the poorest of the poor.

Who needs the Libs for cold-blooded heartlessness when you've got the ALP.

Think the most scary part of Macklin's comment was it was inaudable in the transcript by her office.

I saw two supporting Mum's today who'd each brought a disturbed early adolescent in for assessment.
Both said the same thing, "My rent is $50 a day!"

Subsidised housing is, I gather, as rare as rocking horse manure in WA.

$350 a week? Many cheaper alternatives than that in as Adelaide.

That's a ridiculous comment. Welcome to the ways of spin.
If it'd been in China, the question wouldn't have been asked and if it had been, the journo would have been dragged away.
Perspective, please.

I think Psyber might've meant $50 a week, which is Housing Trust. For the record HT places are almost impossible to get these days, 50 year waiting list for Category 3 and even Category 1 (emergency housing, battered spouses etc) can be upto a 10 year wait now. I've heard of families living in their cars waiting years before getting one.

It's what happens when a so-called State Labor govt starts selling off HT properties/land to their big developer mates without replenishing them. Throw in the fact once they're in one they can't force them out even if they get a job and can easily fend for themselves in the private market, so smartly stay in them for life and then combined with people living a lot longer these days and from what I've heard the HT dept is having their funding reduced too.

This is in Bunbury WA and nearby areas - rents seem to be high - as are prices. The 3 bedroom unit in the Bunbury CBD near the beach, which the WA SW area health service is renting to supply to me free, has just been sold to a new investor for around $600K.

No. These two examples are women who have lived in this area most of there lives and have been through divorce from guys who have then disappeared, and who have 2 or 3 children from 16 down. Both already have part-time jobs to help pay the rent and have been on waiting lists for subsidised housing for years.

They can't raise the dough to move to the cheapest fringes of Perth - if there are any - and cheaper housing down here tends to be in places with little or no public transport, making running a car essential.

My LCP political affiliation is well known, and I am not sympathetic to bludgers, but there are real situations that have to be considered.

There may be - I haven't actually searched, but that price seems about average looking in the odd agent's window as I go past.
One of the woman has just got a 4 bedroom house for $325 a week - for her and her 3 kids.

I'm getting $380 a week for a 4 bed place in Mt Barker in SA that I bought recently.
(As distinct from the Mt Barker over here near Denmark and Albany.)
