I vaguely recall a game at the Bay in the late 60's, against North I think. Glenelg had been to Perth to play a pre-season trial game and Neil Kerley came back suggesting that Glenelg would start using a Burley ball in their home games cause the Burley didn't get as heavy in the wet. The Bay was a bog in those days.
Anyway... at some stage in the game against North, a goal was scored but the ball was not returned from the crowd. After some time had elapsed the Glenelg bench threw out a Burley ball at which point a North trainer or runner promptly picked up the ball and booted it into the crowd... the game was re-started with a Faulkner...
Does anyone recall this??
Your on the money. I have heard that story a few times over the years.
I remember it vividly.
It was April 27, 1968 at the Glenelg Oval. Glenelg had tried out the yellow ball (I think after playing a trial in Perth), and decided to use it for the first time in this match.
It was in the 3rd quarter, they were using North's traditional red ball but it was booted out of the ground after a goal. Glenelg threw their yellow ball onto the ground as a replacement.
North's Chairman of Selectors Jack Sutter saw this and ran onto the ground to retrieve the ball. Realising what was happening, Glenelg's room steward George Brown ran towards Sutter.
Sutter grabbed the ball and booted it out into the crowd despite a tackle from Brown. It all looked absolutely ridiculous and I don't think the SANFL were very impressed.
For memory, I don't think the umpires accepted the yellow ball as it hadn't been approved by the SANFL for use in league matches.
