I remember a couple years ago at a Port v North friday night clash at Adelaide walking up to Darren and asking if he would like to re-join there cheer squad, I was politliy told he didnt think I would be appropriate with his brother coaching the opperstition.

Darren was a Port supporter, but Andrew never was, he was a North supporter from an incredibly young age, he only signed with North because his absolute idol, Barrie Robran came out to his place to sign him. It was the closest North have come to a Dynasty, with Barrie Robran only signing with North because of D. Lindner and A Jarman only signing with North because of B Robran. Remember that the Jarman brothers were actually tied to West Torrens under that ridiculous zoning that gave much of the North East to Torrens, but North courtesy of B Robran beat Central and Norwood in particular to his signature.

Well the records do say Andrew Jarman and Darren Jarman, oh well just thought it was a nice bit of trivia
The problem with Barcelona is that I like fish and chips but they had to turn it into calamari and patatas

Love those 'near-miss' stories.

Like Ebert with North, Cahill with South, Antrobus with Port and so on.

But my favourite goes back to early 1900s. South were reportedly the first club to recruit an Aboriginal player. Great fanfare as South officials went down to the Railway Station to pick him up.

Port got wind of this, beat them to the punch and whisked him away, leaving poor old South officials scratching their heads wondering what the hell happened to their prized recruit?

He was halfway to Alberton.

My favourite story like that also relates to South. Jimmy Deane finished his career at Port Pirie and was still playing well into his mid 30s in about 1965. Remember at that time the Spencer Gulf league comprised 12 teams, 4 each from Whyalla, Port Augusta and Port Pirie. Jimmy contacted South to say that there were three players in the comp worth recruiting, a rover from Solomontown, a centreman, cum centre half forward from North Whyalla and a ruck rover from another of the Whyall sides. The recruiter looked at all three and said "the rover's too small, the ruck rover's too light and the centreman, cum Centre Half Forward is too slow." I guess Nunan was short, Cornes was light, but Robran slow!!! Perhaps his loping stride made him look slow. With recruiters like that no wonder they went from top to bottom in 5 years.

Not sure if this is accurate, but I've been told a couple of times the story of a player recruited by a SANFL club this millenium, that had actually been the target of a rival club.

Allegedly this player met with his (now) current club first and spent a night out on the town with a couple of the players before he was due to meet with his intended club the following morning.

Apparently the night out was messy for all concerned with plenty of consumption, and some of his would-be teammates changed the time on his phone causing him to sleep in the following morning and miss the meetings with his would be suitors.
