Two Wells took on Hummocks-Watchman Eagles at Two Wells Oval on Saturday. The Roosters made five changes from the side that was defeated by Balaklava in Round 11. Kahn Leighton, Christian Nurton, Andrew Hardiman and Mark Illingworth were resuming from injury while Lachlan Franklin was promoted from the Reserves. They replaced the injured Lee Allmond, Stephen Lange and Clinton McDonald while Scott Wise and Michael Abdilla were omitted. The Eagles kicked to Cemetery end with the aid of strong breeze in the first quarter and it wasn’t long before former Willaston Captain Lee Belperio kicked the first goal of match for Hummocks courtesy of a 50 metre penalty. Hummocks took full advantage of wind and kicked another 4 goals to lead by 24 points at first change. Two Wells could only manage two goals from spearhead Paul Christofis in the second quarter with the wind which would prove very costly as the Roosters trailed by 15 points at the main break. The Eagles dominated play in the third quarter kicking 4 goals with Shane McGuiness and Joe Hunt were causing problems for the Roosters defence. The two points was in the bag for Hummocks at three quarter time as they extended their lead to 41 points while Two Wells had managed just three goals for the afternoon. Two Wells managed to outscore the Eagles in the last quarter including a goal from Roosters Vice-Captain Ned Seccafien who made a miraculous return to the ground after being stretched off in the second quarter. Unfortunately it was too late for the Roosters with the visitors running out winners by 21 points. The Eagles used the conditions well and set the win up by kicking 9 of their 11 goals with the wind in first and third quarters. Ben Nason lookalike Joel Wilson was clearly the Eagles best as he controlled Hummocks defence taking many marks. Paul Christofis played a lone hand up forward for Two Wells kicking 6 of their 7 goals. It was disappointing result for Roosters as they are now a win outside the top 4 after Virginia upset Mallala yesterday. The Roosters who have lost their last three matches against sides who will probably feature in September action must beat the improved United at home next Saturday to remain in the race for the top 4. Hummocks-Watchman Eagles remain in second spot and face a top of the table clash with Mallala at Lochiel. It was a sad day for the Two Wells Football and Netball Club with trainer Tony Watkins wife Ann passing away. Tony is not only a fantastic trainer but a great bloke and our thoughts are with him.
