Don Lindner Walk

Postby robranisgod » Sun Aug 29, 2010 8:47 pm

Today the lane between Kintore Avenue and Prospect Oval was officially named Don Lindner Walk. A plaque showing Don Lindner marking was unveiled at the southern end of the lane at half time of today's match. As a child in the 1960s I used to walk excitedly along that lane looking forward to what miracles Don would perform on the field that day. What an appropriate lasting tribute by the Prospect Council and NAFC.

Nice one.

I wonder what other streets or places have been named after SANFL footballers? I know there is a Carey Close in Glenelg North named after Super.

Lindner Lane has a ring to it, but it's a great idea and well done to the North Adelaide Football Club for honouring a great champion in this way.

I guess we're lucky Craig Cock wasn't a champion for South then ...

There's a whole area in Salisbury North named after Central players after their first finals win in 1971. There's Casserly Street, Window Court, Andrews Street, Haughan Drive, Moore Court, Nicks Road, Cochrane Road, Mobbs Court, Swinstead Crescent, Ireland Road, Mulholland Avenue,Vivan Court, Norsworthy Avenue, Pyatt Court, and Spaans Crescent. Obviously one very enthusiatic Central member in the council at that time.

I'm presuming these were named after Souths' win in 1964 in Athelstone:

Kantilla Dr, Kerley Cr, Christie Ct, Shaw St

The thing to look out for in the street directory is areas which obviously are football orientated, like those two examples above. Another is Casserley Cr and Morey Dr, Salisbury Heights.

Yep, and in Noarklunga Downs: Kantilla Court, Naley Court, Darley Circuit and Deane Avenue.

So would Soapy Kantilla be the only player in Australia to have two streets named after him?

How do you fellas find all this out?

I just live up the road from these streets and drive through them every now and again and have never put 2 and 2 together. :-??

I will always remember the day all those Central guys had streets named after them. I thought at the time that some people have a life time of achievement before having a street named after them, and these were a bunch of footballers who finished third :) A bit like the time the Crows had a ticker tape parade in the streets of Adelaide after failing in the 1993 finals.

I have a mate who lives in Robran Court, Newton. Don't know if it was named after Barrie, but right next to it is Aish Close. I wonder.

Developers do some interesting things, trying to come up with street names, though sometimes there is a rational purpose.
Corcoran Drive on Delfin Island was named to get the SA government on side and to support the development plan.
Other times they come up with something that they think may catch the attention of potential buyers.
Or they may be just desperate for ideas..

Back in the early days of opening up the Para Hills region my older sister was part owner of a developing company subdividing the area.
They ran out of ideas for street names, and resorted to naming the streets after members of the firm.
My sister's name was "Beryl" so that gave them the idea of naming all the streets in that bit after gemstones.
I was around 10 to 12 years old at the time and was pleased to get a street named after me in the process.
[There is also one bearing our surname in the region.]

Jim West has had a few thousand streets named after him ;)

Seriously though I reckon many more streets should be named after footballers. Makes more sense and gives an area more character to an area than the seemingly random names that most streets have.

I like street directories. :)

And AH, Tony Casserly has two named after him as well - what you stated and the one at Salisbury Heights.

Also, at Parafield Gardens, there is a Hodges Ct, Jarman Wy, Maynard Cr and Tregenza Ct

Different sport but I know a heap of roads in Woodcroft got named after one of Adelaide Citys championship teams. Shillabeer Cr, Perin Ave, Steve Lane, Tobin Cr, Mori St, Vidmar Cct, Veart Ct, Hassell Ct, etc all close to each other.
Ahh, the days when Adelaide had a soccer club they could be proud of!

These streets were all in a Hickinbotham Homes (or whatever the company was called at the time) subdivision, so it's pretty likely the names were chosen by Alan H. himself.

I live in Parker Street, perhaps named after Brendan, infamous for smearing his blood over a Sturt opponent (I Think) :)

Yes smeared it over Damian Squire I believe and they were team mates last year in Broadview's D2 premiership side.
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

And best mates. The umpire fell for the absolute three card trick between two mates having a laugh during the game,
