barrie robran MBE legend....the book out soon

Postby bayman » Tue Aug 31, 2010 10:11 pm

i picked up a 'flyer' at the post office today, it is the unauthorised biography written by bruce pointon

book launch at nafc at 10.10am on the 10/10/10 (obvious reference to his number)

or at the north whyalla football clubrooms wileman st, whyalla at 10.30am on the 30/10/10

oh i've just noticed this site (so that'll stop me typing it all)

http://robranbiog.weebly.com

looking at the quotes etc in the 'flyer' it will be an outstanding book
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

The author Bruce Pointon tells me Barrie wasn't too keen on the idea and didn't contribute to the book, but there was no shortage of people volunteering information to piece his story together. Should be a great read, I've already ordered my copy, and hopefully Barrie will be pleased once he sees the finished product. It has taken 6 years to complete.

If people don't want to read it ... their loss. I've helped Bruce with some facts and figures from time to time and know the amount of effort and attention to detail he has put into this. Imagine not buying or reading something just because it was unauthorised :)

Barrie Robran is a great SA football story, a story that needed to be told.

I wrote this post at 10.10pm :)

The author of this book, Bruce Pointon, is supposed to be on ABC 891 tonight about 9.15 with Peter Goers and Mike Sexton...

From this, Bruce claims the book is 608 pages thick, contains over 600 pictures, and he interviewed 103 people. It covers his junior years at North Whyalla, his recruitment and career at North Adelaide, his other sporting feats in cricket, basketball, etc, as well as sporting achievements of his family. I'm looking forward to it.

Had a flick through a friend's copy tonight - I can't believe it's so big (as the actress said to the bishop) and I hope the text is as good as the photos. My favourite is on page 216 - soaring over a couple of hapless Blues champions with a packed grandstand in the background - along with one of Barrie outmarking Don Lindner. Hadn't seen either of these before - is there no end to the photos of the man taking speccies?

Hear, hear. I totally agree with this.

Barrie is one of the gentlemen from an era when what you did on the sporting field was separate from your life.
An era when you played for the love of it and did not receive (as many of) the kickbacks that you get from playing these days.
Barrie, despite his wish to stay in the background, is an absolute icon of the game and his story does need to be told, if only to remind us of a time when football was played the way he and his contemporaries played it.
And, of course, to reminds us how good he truly was.
I am saddened that Barrie chose not to be part of the book, it is almost naive of him to believe that people would not be interested in his story.
However, I do understand his desire for privacy - another example of why the man is so great.
Maybe a fellow contemporary and Magarey Medallist, who continues to find himself in the media for all of the wrong reasons, should take note of the wonderful example Robran continues to set to us all in his personal and business dealings.

So, now the Robran book's out...when does the Ebert one get released?

This is an amazing book to be written on one person.
You would have to be secretly chuffed to have something like this published about you even if you are super humble
