Definition of Knuckler?

If it is "cowardly hit from behind then running like a scared little girl" then A Stringer - IN

If not - OUT (no time for the guy at all).

From North though - Wayne Stringer definitely.

Mike Dozna could fight big time - but a lot of that was of court :)

.. and David Owens (1982-85 vintage) could also lay one on and off the field.

while i wouldn't say he was a 'knuckler' in the sense of sniping blokes etc, but the best punch i ever witnessed watching footy was simon luhrs on darryl poole in a final in the mid 1990's.....his first punch connected so well that poole didn't feel the second punch as he was already out cold as he fell to the ground
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I've just watched 'The Tigers of Old' DVD and discovered
that Fred Phillis was just as 'robust' (ahem) with opposition fullbacks
as brother Wayne was with the rest of their opponents
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

And Poole deserved both of them this day, after he started it by headbutting Luhrs first.

I was sitting in the members stand and saw the headbut, but all the Port people around me only saw the punches, and boy, did they go off. I was that mad I was ready to take on the whole grandstand. And I was only a neutral supporter :D

Did you play Indoor Cricket against him at Stepney that night? Absolute dog of a bloke. Lost the game and paid out his own team mates ranting and raving as he went up to the bar.

Not so much a knuckler, but Pat Wiggins had his moments at West.

The reserves game at Prospect where he was dragged, stormed off, took off his jumper, walked through the crowd (all the while turning back to groups of North fans giving him a send-off, before being pulled away), went to the changerooms and emerged ten minutes later, just in shorts, getting into his car and driving off, remains one of the odder things I've seen in the last few years of SANFL.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

didn't Dean Howard belt a team-mate?
I seem to recall Bay fans squealing about giving one of theirs a touch up

Then when he goes face to face with some one he ends up with his eye completley shut.

Refer to 1991 GF

you're kidding right?

West started the dirty tactics, & yes, Sims belted some no-name from West.
After that, West players & support staff ensured all future fights were 2 or 3 on to 1- hold a bloke down while someone else belts them.
So yes, Sims had his eye closed up, not by the guy he was facing off with, but from behind.

I should watch these fights prior to going to Richmond Oval...

Only a red&white eyed North fan could not see the thug in Sims.

I always thought it was out of character for Sims. It was the only time he was suspended in his career. He was reported one other time, but found not guilty. Compare that record with G McIntosh - 23 reports in his career. Klomp and Salisbury were both also into the teens in reports. As an opposition supporter I always thought that Glen Goss was up there with the knucklers, but I only saw him mainly against North. If you watch the replay of the 1991 Grand Final Goss seemed to start most of the fights, especially in the first quarter.

I remember him giving Culpitt a good one in front of the grand stand at Richmond (iirc).

He tried to do the same thing to Greg Phillips a year earlier in the 3rd quarter of the 90 Prelim. Came from behind, huge wind up and roundhouse to the side of his face. Phillips didnt budge though.
