Was a bit like the opening game for the Adelaide Crows, when some members of the Victorian media were wondering aloud about this debutant they had never heard of called David Marshall.

It's an unfortunate terminology the Victorians used. They regarded VFL as "league" football. I don't know about the origins of the term, but it always seemed odd to me considering they played carnival and interstate football against bodies known as South Australian Football LEAGUE, Western Australian Football LEAGUE, Tasmanian Football LEAGUE, etc.

I recall when Phil Carman played his first season of VFL in 1975 and won a number of media awards. One interviewer (I think it was Lou Richards) asked him what he thought of his first season in League Football. Carman looked a little confused by the question and said he'd played 4 seasons with Norwood. If went right over Richards' head.

I'm thinking a lot of it stemmed from the fact they were known as Victorian Football LEAGUE, whereas another competition in that state was known as Victorian Football ASSOCIATION.

In actual fact, we South Australians are possibly just as bad by making reference to the top level of footy in this state as "League". Most players in SA play League Football, all the word "League" means is any federation of clubs forming a competition.

The one that used to drive me nuts was Eddie McGuire commentating when an AFL player had his "first kick IN FOOTBALL" or "first goal IN FOOTBALL".

Total and utter arrogance.

Like what were they playing through the junior and state league years?

You'd think with Gilbert McAdam as a co-host they'd know better.

Just went into a Newsagent and noticed an Advertiser sporting book, with Bob Hammond on the cover.

Presumably a flag Norwood won in the 70's, my guess 1975.

Anyone know is pictured alongside him?

Found an ad for the book on line:

Is it Michael Poulter?

I feel like I shouldn't answer that question, but it is Poulter and therefore has to be 1975 - particularly with no logos on the front.

Thought it might have been Poulter. I was chatting to him at a pub with 2 or 3 other ex Norwood blokes a year or 2 ago. Was a friendly bloke. He said he initially came down to play for Torrens, but finished up with Norwood after a few Redlegs people visited him in hospital after recuperating from an operation.

I take it that he doesn't have the afro now. ;) Even though that was your stereotypical 70s haircut, was there anyone else who had an afro apart from Poulter?

Yeah definitely Mike Poulter and definitely 75.

Back on subject there was a quiz during the year that had a question "Who was the only current coach not to play league football?" The answer - Neil Craig.

Actually on the subject of quizzes, although not really of a myopic view. Someone I work with had the question come up in a quiz night he went to:

"Who is the youngest recipient of the Magarey Medal"

The people on the table he was on turned to him for the answer. He gave them the answer: Tony McGuinness.

The answer the quiz night holders had was Brett Ebert.

Spot on Bayman. A very under-rated player was Mike Poulter.

I would have thought McGuinness would have been younger than Brett Ebert. Perhaps LL can help me out here, I thought 1901 medallist Phil Sandland was the youngest, but was he eclipsed by McGuinness and/or Ebert?

McGuinness was definitely younger than Ebert.

Freddie was 18 and change (roughly four months) when he won the medal in '82.

Whereas Megahead was about 19 and ten months when he won in 2003.

Sandland was also 18 when he won and most sources confirm him as the youngest Medallist.

Didn't Ron Benton of West Adelaide win one when he was very young?

Benton was 19 when he won it. When McGuinness won it the papers of the day stated that he was the youngest since Sandland. Sandland was 18 when he won the medal so he must have been less than McGuinness' 18 years and 4 months.
