Down the hill football

Post by Esteban Vihaio »

It is roughly 25 square kilometres around Cross Road, South, Sturt and Brighton Road and South Road. In that space, you have SHOC's, BDOS, Marion, Mitchell Park, Edwardstown, Plympton, PHOS, Kenilworth, Flinders University, and Westminster OS. In the early 90's, all these clubs were able to field sides in colts grades (bar Flinders Uni). This has not happened since. The number of kids in the area has certainaly decreased seeing Marion, Glengowrie and Vermont High Schools close.

Former powerhouse clubs like Morphetville Park, Marion, Kenilworth and Plympton are now struggling to compete with little to no juniors refreshing the senior ranks. It is a tough market and whilst all these clubs survive, most will will struggle for players, sponsors and competing against clubs in the sprawling south (SFL) and North (SAAFL). If one or two of these clubs fold or merge, the remaining will all benefit and will once again be competitive. However, everyone is proud and wants to go it alone.

- BDOS, PHOS and SHOCS are the strongest clubs, seniors and juniors wise.
- Edwardtown have competitive seniors and a good junior base that is just moving over from Metro South to SFL.
- Kenilworth and Plympton are in the lower grades of SAAFL, but have a good junior base.
- Morphetville Park are financially sound but struggle to field colts sides
- Mitcall Park have struggled in the Senior and Juniors.
- Marion are struggling with seniors and juniors but have the best facillities.
- Flinders Uni have struggled with their seniors, but have a fountain of youth at their doorstop.
Where's Bill? Yeah... Hmm... Bill is on the Villa Quatro, on the road to Salina. I will draw you a map.

might want to re check those facts mate. Square meters ect the facts are the SAaFL sides most likely never fielded sides in the early 90s. Also with double the grades now playing compared to then id suggest the numbers have increased

also id never call us a powerhouse club mate. We havent played any higher than div 4 since 96 and we didnt have juniors then. We also have had very competative senior colts the last 3 years and are filtering into seniors. Probably the main reason why we won a reserves premiership this year plympton are pretty much in the same boat also

How about a 2 week ban for shooting your mouth off. Go back and check who started the thread. Surprising coming from a Flaggies person. You guys are normally at your best in December.

Massive problem and great post.

Marion area is a retirement village and every junior gets gobbled up by Brighton & SHOCS and can you blame them.

Will get worse before it gets better and over time if some of these clubs don't merge they will fold.

But as EV said all far too proud.

And DTH why are you posting at 12.49am on a Tuesday...

OK sorry guys, thats what happens when you are half asleep and still on the computer. This weather is upsetting all us Bomber boys. The spray on tans are still looking fake without the sun to make them golden, and its been too chilly for the designer tank top and denim shorts.

I can understand the points being made but seriously half of these statements are a tad glorified.

Marion and Morphettville Park have not been anything near a junior powerhouse in the last 15 years and in that time surrounding clubs from the SAAFL have established their juniors and have overtaken them. Powerhouses play in grand finals....How many grand finals have Morphettville Park,Marion and Keniilworth played in at Junior level in the past 20 years??
SAAFL clubs did not have juniors 15 years ago...... The main problem is that there are too many grades and not enough juniors. The player numbers have increased dramatically compared to even 10 years ago, the issue is that there are not enough players to play 1 different age group from U8s-u18s across all clubs.
Too many parents are precious and say they dont want their kids playing against kids sometimes 2 years older than them and they may get hurt. So then they turn to other sports. In fear to this some leagues have resorted to making age groups jump yearly rather than every 2 years.
Clubs dont have to merge, just need to have a more sustainable junior program to spread the juniors. But unfortunatly some parents are too precious and some leagues are getting the pressure to bend their rules to satisfy their issues.

EV - people at Metro South don't like hearing about Edwardstown's juniors moving to southern league. I believe they will be in MSJFL in 2011 and plan to stay there.

LK - I disagree, there is enough kids to play in single year age groups, gets a bit tougher in the older age groups though. The reason the MSJFL has turned to single year age groups is due to the increase in number of participants rather than out of fear of losing players.
