Rick Davies versus Peter Carey

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

I don't know about "never", but your point is well made. Davies also tried himself in the (then) superior VFL competition. He didn't do too badly either in his one year with the Hawks.

To sum up Davies, very few (if any) players could have produced the performance he displayed in the 1976 GF, and that's why I rate him the superior player to Carey.

I actually saw him play for the Hawks at the MCG against Richmond in 1981. 20 games for 37 goals is not a bad effort.

I get annoyed when players step up a league, perform well without dominating, then people call them a "failure" - something I often encounter in Melbourne in reference to Ebert and Davies. Ebert was North's leading possession winner in his one season and their third highest poller in the Brownlow. Even Cornes booted 10 goals in his 5 games - two goals a game in a pocket would be considered pretty handy these days.

Good points, wasn't Ebert played out of position too?

Re Ebert: Played out of position (back pocket i think?), flew over for training and games, and was aged 29 the year he went over. In a way, would have liked to have seen him have more years in the VFL to prove he'd be a champion in any league, although obviously that would have been at the expense of my beloved Port.

Additionally, Barassi had no confidence in either Ebert or Cornes, so given this they really did have somewhat a disadvantage whilst playing at NM.

Russell Ebert did not play in the back pocket, he played as a ruck-rover and in the centre, just as he did with Port Adelaide. He had a magnificent season wit hthe Roos, he was their highest possession gatherer and polled very well in the Brownlow.

I think he did at the start but was moved as the season progressed despite performing well there, he was bamboozled himself, that as from his own mouth too.

What was the most goals Ken Farmer ever kicked in a game? Not saying that was better but he must have had some great individual games.
