The quantity and quality of Dave Mustaines leads is amazing. He writes some of the most complicated leads imaginable and makes it look effortless.

Everyone has their faves. I started playing the guitar when I saw Slash play the opening riff to Sweet Child! He isn't the greatest of all time, but he stirred the inner metal guitarist!
Guitarists take little licks and riffs from everywhere and create their own style. My style is blues based (Hendrix, Slash, SRV) mixed with some new metal (Jerry Cantrell, Adam Jones, Andreas Kisser) but I refuse to let my style get technical (Petrucci, Zappa, Vai) and wanky (Malmsteen, Morello)

When you're talking rock guitar, you have to break this thread into 3 different types: Riffs, leads, rhythm.

Best riffs: Hetfield, Corgan, Dimebag
Lead: Hammet, Ace Frehley
Rhythm: Malcolm Young, Hetfield, Richards

Tony Iommi is the undisputed riff master.

Matt Bellamy and Tom Morrello for mine best i ve seen live . Priveliged enough to meet Mike McCready on two occasions and he said he would flick me some picks if i was front row , on spotting me he spent half the show throwing them at me for me to go home empty handed :(

Always a great debate topic.

Hendrix, SRV and Jeff Beck for me. Jeff beck one of the few dinosaur guitarists still cutting it. His concert in Adelaide last year was gold.

Intersting to see a similar poll on Australian guitarists. If scottish born Angus Young is included you would think he would romp it in. After that who is there ? Ian Moss, Chris Cheney, kevin Borich, Shane Pacey, Dave Hole, Tommy Emmanuel, Ash naylor ??????

With all due respect Rowland S Howard, Charlie Owen, Spencer P Jones, Mick Turner & Kim Salmon leave everyone on that list for dead (except Young and Borich). You could also chuck in John Nolan, Penny Ikinger and Deniz Tek (a yank, but we adopted him with Birdman and The Visitors).

For what it's worth Eric Clapton has been quoted as saying Tommy Emmanuel is "the greatest guitar player I've ever seen".
Not everyone's cup of tea, but no doubt an extremely good guitarist.

Rubbish.
He is an acoustic guitar player and a picker (albeit a very good one), if he played the electric guitar and changed the way a generation plays the guitar maybe.
Clapton needs to get out more, and not just to pub.

He is quality for sure.

David Haley from Psycroptic might have a bit to say in regards to Australia's best drummer though.

And as for Australian guitarists, Paul Kaiser is an amazing player and would be right up there.

Hendrix is amazing just for the fact he played with a left handed axe, upside down. Is that true?

Bump.
After seeing a lot more of Tom Morello over the last few years while he's been touring with The Boss he now gets my vote. An absolute magician.

At the moment, I'm really into:

- Marc Rizzo (ex-Ill Niño, Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, solo) for his dexterity and mastery of a number of styles.

- Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad, solo). As a guitarist of differing styles, I love his tone and his knack of knowing which notes to play and not play. He never finds himself in 'wank' mode.

- Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains, solo) - I love his fusion of dirty blues riffs in a hard rock/metal setting, and even Alice In Chains' softer moments are incredible due to Cantrell's influence.

- Alex Lifeson (Rush) - Although much of Rush's early catalogue (especially 2112, Hemispheres, Caress of Steel and A Farewell to Kings) does have a lot of 'wank' material, Lifeson knows how to serve each song fully. In a band containing Neil Peart and Geddy Lee, Lifeson's output is largely ignored, but vital to Rush's sound nonetheless. For those who don't know Rush, I suggest listening to:
1. Superconductor from Presto,
2. Animate from Counterparts,
3. Entre Nous from Permanent Waves,
4. Caravan from Clockwork Angels, and
5. Subdivisions from Signals.
