Yeah defintely North. He spoke at a lunch I went to once where he told of playing reserves for the Bays in Round 1 1967, and then going to Unley to watch North, and thus Barrie Robran's first game.

Top shelf footballer. Top shelf commentator.

went to unley, so that's where it came from & how i thought it was sturt.....i'll claim i was half right :D

That was the only time because he made the Glenelg team in round 2 and played every game after that. Peter Daicos tells a similar story when he was playing for Collingwood Reserves, the moment the siren rang he would shoot through and have a pie and few beers watching South Melbourne with his mates.

JANUARY 19
Woodville made a offer to Wayne Phillis

PHILLIS
Wayne ''Butch"" Phillis was a genuine toughman in the SANFL
Remember him as a brute of a CHB for Glenelg
History shows that Butch ended up at the Parade later this season, and it ends up being a wise decision
When he did, NW had Phillis and Elbows Wynne playing, that would have made the opposition shudddddddddddddder
For a big tough man, he had good skills as well
Must have done well in his footy days, he would be seen driving flash cars

I have a memory of Wayne Phillis thinking he was tough and being put in his place. It would've been in the early 70s for South Aust against Tasmania in Hobart. There were a succession of boundary throw-ins and Phillis was repeatedly jumping with both feet well off the ground into the back of Tassie ruckman Barry Pascoe (ex-North Adelaide) to win the hit out. Not receiving any help from the umpires, Pascoe, in order to preserve his kidneys, eventually decided he'd had enough. At the next throw-in, he waited for Phillis to jump, then just flicked the back of Phillis' ankles with his hand and forearm. Phillis landed flat on his back from a considerable height and did not attempt the tactic again.

funny about that as i earlier posted this on another thread..........

yeah what happened with butch going to norwood ?, my dad reckons he was going to be traded/swapped to woodville for colin macvicar but woodville refused & he ended up at norwood although there was talk that he was going to stand out of footy for the year (as he remembers it)

i remember the blankets going around at the bay oval collecting coins to send off two retiring glenelg greats one was wayne 'butch' phillis & the other i reckon was peter marker but not 100% on that....when butch went to norwood it very much annoyed me as a kid as i threw my bus fare onto the blanket & walked home.....butch you owe me 20 cents (must see toddy phillis)

JANUARY 20
PA announces that Russell Ebert will continue to play for PA this season

JANUARY 24
Sandy Nelson has a knee operation
Nelson was hopeful to be available for round 1 on 1/4/1978

PHILLIP NELSON
Was a star player, played his best footy at CHB ?
Later sired another ST footballer in Ben Nelson
Sandy didnt end up playing in 1978, guess he fooled a few people by saying he might be ready on april 1st...
What a succesful and rewarding career from 1966-1977
Played in 7 premiership teams [and 5 in a row in his first 5 years]
Played 244 games in a golden era for the ST footy club
Played in 10 state games
in 2004 he was inducted into the hall of fame
Seen the great man at Unley Oval last season
He still looks the same in appearance almost a half a century later

QUESTIONS
Was Sandy ever approached to play VFL footy ?

Would Sandy have made a diff at CHB in the G/final loss to NW later in the year ?

It certainly was. Everyone interested in sport in the 1960s (a bit before your time Mal) knew that Colin Egar was a dry cleaner. He also was a league football umpire who may have had a Grand Final in the 1950s. I'm not sure of that one.

JANUARY 25
Neville Rocky Roberts announces he will fulfill his contract with Richmond FC

JANUARY 26
Woodville refuted suggestions that Ralph Sewer wanted to quit

New CD coach Daryl Hicks has ho objection to Graham Reed practicising at Unley under Jack Oatey
Hicks quotes "" He should be all the better for the experience when he returns to Elizabeth at the start of the season.""

Rick Davies has just recovered form a collapsed lung and Pneumonia admitted Woodville had made him an offer, Sturt were not amused

RALPH SEWER
Remember Ralph taking us for a Primary School coaching session in 1970 !
Zip Zap was a sensational player, not only brilliant but could dish it out, a brilliant left footer
Very good attacking cricketer as well
On the social scene was a real character
He did actually leave Woodville and play for Glenelg

GRAHAM REED
Full forward for CD
Hicks thought it was a good idea for Graham to train under Hicks mentor Jack Oatey pre -season
That backfired, Reed ended up playing for ST in defence this season
Cant believe this is how this transpired

RICK DAVIES
The Jumbo Prince
Champion ruckman
Champion full forward
ST captivated me in the 60s/70s I was impressed with thier style of footy and great players
Jumbo, Flash, Baggy, Kenny Whelan, were amongst some my very favourites at the club
Others that I liked were Winter, Zubrinich, Bob Oatey, Pettingill, Barton, Nunan ...
DAVIES ran 2nd in the 1974 Mag Medal and won numerous B/F awards at the club
Prob the best 6'3'' sized ruckman to play in the SANFL
I had thought that Jumbo revolutionised Checkside tactics, but I have been corrected on this matter

Daryl Hicks - obviously a great footballer and reasonable coach.

One of the most unusual educated people I've ever heard speak though. I really just couldn't work him out when he used to commentate for the ABC.

He umpired the 1956 & 1957 Grand Finals. As for being a dry cleaner, he certainly took Ian Meckiff to the cleaners and hung him out to dry.

Spot on the GWW. He used to say some incredibly odd things for an apparently educated man. I had a mate who played for Central at the time and he thought Hicks was weird, but not as strange as Gary Window.

Rocky had a change of heart real quick, he was back playing with West Torrens that year.

Ralph Sewer almost had me banned from the Redlegs Club. Zip Zap set a record that night for the most number of slaps in the face by upset females, and he was only there a short time before being turfed out.

I actually didn't mind Window as a footy commentator, from memory he did a bit of radio commentary, and possibly some on channel 9.

He came across as fairly exuberant though, so i'm not surprised he was also regarded as being unusual/weird.

"Controlled aggression" I remember being a favourite phrase of his.
But his commentary was always a bit clinical and slightly sterile, or detached. A bit more raw, uneducated passion wouldn't have gone astray. I think he had the passion, it just didn't come across in his commentary.

He also would say things like "coach Cahill" or "coach Balme". The way he spoke was almost robotic.

FEBUARY 6
Sturt obtained Gary Hardeman from Melbourne
The fee was believed to be inxs of $30k

HARDEMAN
Only played 4 games in his debut season
That ends up amounting to little value for money
Hardeman as mentioned previously by Baggy08, did finish 3rd in a Mag medal the following season

ADVERT
Nelson and Casey Sports stores
With summer just around the corner, now is the time to call in and see Sandy Nelson, Colin Casey or Gary Hardeman to discuss our new sporting requirements
167A UNLEY ROAD and at SHOP 46 MITCHAM SHOPPING CENTRE PHONE 272 5111

Ironic, Nelson and Hardeman worked together, both Centre Half Backs, both injured in 78
Nelson forced to retire, Hardeman played those 4 games
Considering how well Brain Adamson played up forward in the 1978 Grand Final, Sturt might have been stiff

Might history have changed If Gary and or Sandy played in the 78 Grand Final ....

Gary Hardeman spent most of the season on the sidelines, only just got back into footy, and then for some inane reason, minor premiers North Melbourne and Sturt decided to play a trial game during the finals, and it was in this game that Hardeman was injured. History recalls both sides lost their Grand Finals.

Yes NM played ST in a trial game on 9/9/78
The game was played prior to the Elimination Final at Football Park
NM won the trial by 56 points
Gary Hardeman had his left cheekbone fractured
The game was reported as being of high standard and an entertaining match

ST supporters at the time must have had mixed reactions to this game, and this injury
NM travelled here for the match, would the travelling have affected thier VFL finals campaign ?

QUESTION
Would anyone have any recollection of this match
