1978 The year it was

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

CP this would be the game in Question

GL 12-14
NW 4-7
1981 prelim final

I had been overseas for almost all the season
I was in Darwin September 81 and was in love
But NW was in a prelim final
I caught the flight to Adelaide too see the prelim final, the only game I spectated in 1981

It was one of the most frustrating games of footy I have ever seen
GL kicked with a typhoon in the first qtr and led by about 7 goals at 1/4 time
Late in that 1st qtr the typhoon swirled around to the opposite direction
GL had the hurricane in the 2nd quarter
In all GL had the breeze for 3 quarters
If ever a game was decided by the toss of a coin, then this was it

And I left Darwin for this game ....

So in summation, you jinxed us and we lost? ;)

I was in Melb for the Collingwood v Carlton GF with my old man, and all I wanted to know was the SANFL scores .. Was gutted when I heard them as I remember thinking we were a decent chance going in, but the scoreline suggested we'd been mauled.

It was a 6 goal advantage
There 4 GL should have won by 72 points !
GL only won by 55 points ;)

So a retrospective moral victory? :D

Was Copping playing then? Was he better than Splinterdick in that game? :D

I can't swear this is true because of the way memories of exploits can be enhanced with time but I have a recollection of seeing Shearman and Bob Day both kicking drop kick goals at Unley Oval from around the centre of the ground in the same match. I ran into Shearman in a pub in Melbourne years ago and mentioned it to him - he couldn't remember it but didn't reject the notion of it.

The only match I found where Shearman and Day both kicked goals in the same match at Unley Oval was Round 11, 11 July 1968. If it happened, surely it would have been mentioned in the write ups in the Mail or Advertiser.

I could see Shearman perhaps doing it, I saw him kick a behind from just ahead of centre at Norwood Oval. Not sure about Day, he was a long and accurate drop kick, but I couldn't see him covering a full half of a ground. Still, you never know.

SANFL clubs were able to snare some big fish from Mexico in those days, but I imagine John Murphy was a bit out of our reach. He was a bona fide star and I would have been surprised if another VFL club didn't pick him up. I was always disappointed he never elected to play for the Hawks under the father-son rule.

MAY 6 +7
ROUND 6

SA 14-14 WV 13-12
PA 19-29 WT 14-11
WA 13-12 ST 9-14
GL 19-24 NA 15-12
NW 20-16 CD 13-11

WA who had only won 1 game b4 this round and beat the undefeated ST
This ends up being the only Minor round game that ST had lost for the season
I used to run a weekly tipping pool, winner takes all for most wins and nearest margin for a specified game
In the whole of the Bank where I worked I was the solitary person who tipped WA, and scooped the pool !

MAY 8
CD lodge clearance papers to secure BIG name recruit Max George
George, full forward at Swan Districts [73] WA[3] and played 1 season for Fitzroy [have no details of games played]

MAY 11
MALcolm Greenslade ends a 13 season career with ST to pursue a career with Edwardstown
The big name player kicked 613 goals in 216 games in a truly great career for the Blues
MAL also played for SA 4 times

LADDER after RD6

ST 5-1 ...57-48
GL 5-1...56-92
NW 4-2...56-47
PA 4-2...55-44

CD 3-3...47-38
WA 2-4...48-36
WV 2-4...43-78
NA 1-5...44-10
WT 1-5...43-50

ST are averaging 122.3 points per game, WA by restricting ST to a total of 66 points found a BLUE print way to beat them
GL were averaging 121.3 points per game
Scores were highish in 1978 so far
It made for attractive spectating
I like watching footy thesedays, but it has become a lot more defensive

Max played for Fitzroy in 1976, only played 8 games for 21 goals, 5 goals on debut against Essendon. He played in the first ever state game at Football Park in 1974 kicking 6 goals for WA.

His first up season for Central was productive but he didn't do a lot after that. He switched to West Torrens for awhile but didn't do much there either.

The club was 100 years old in 1978
And currently 133 years old

On 28/2/1878 there was a meeting at the Norfolk Arms Hotel in town

MAY 13-14
ROUND 7

ST 28-21 PA 14-8
WA 16-9 SA 8-12
NW 15-16 NA 8-18
GL 23-20 WV 16-13
WT 20-13 CD 11-8

Colin Mcvicar made his debut for GL
Wayne Bbbbbbbbbbbutch Phillis debuted for NW

ST absolutely smashed PA by a mammoth 98 points in the 1st v 4th game at Unley
Mr Magic Paul Bagshaw kicked 10 goals further emphasing what a gifted and versatile footbaler he was after etching his name as a star midfielder ruck rover type most of his career
One of the coolest uncomplicated skillful footballers ever to grace a SANFL football ground I wonder if he would have been a star in the VFL comp at the time ?
The loss to WA the week b4 might have been a catalyst to ST pulverising PA
One wonders how 17,097 people all fitted in into the Unley Oval that day

MAY 16
SA beat PA by 4 goals in the NFL comp at Norwood Oval
Incredibly this was the first time SA had beaten PA for about 10 years

Lyle Skinner announces his retirement as a CD player, after 204 wonderful games

MAY 18
NW signed up Subiaco forward Geoff Clark
Clark made little impact with 1 goal in 2 games in 1978

QUESTIONS
How good was Lyle Skinner , he seemed to play OK when I saw him play
Geoff Clark, was he injured in 1978 ?
Would Paul Bagsahw have been a sensation in the VFL ?
