Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Sturt finished 9th in 1979 and i believe had a massive amount of injuries.
One of my earliest memories was watching a sturt v norwood game and they ended up with 16 fit players.
Graham broke his arm on a goal post I remember and sturt kicked a very low amount.
If spelly or anyone could give the summary of that game it would be much appreciated.

Sturt had some real up and down years through that period ...

1976 - 1st
1977 - 7th
1978 - 2nd
1979 - 9th
1980 - 3rd
1981 - 6th
1982 - 4th
1983 - 2nd
1984 - 7th

GL 12-13 NW 10-14

Glenelg kicked 10.2 in the first quarter and 2.11 for the rest of the game. Upon hearing the qtr score I thought it was a case of how far!!! How wrong was I

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

For some reason I can remember Torrens always giving Norwood grief between mid 70's - mid 80's no matter where they were on ladder.

Yep, it used to amaze me as well. We would compete with the likes of Sturt, Port Adelaide & Glenelg, win more than our fair share, but always has troubles with West Torrens and Woodville whereas the other "top teams" didn't seem to have much of a problem with them.

From memory of seeinghim play against Norwood when I was a kid, he was primarily a ruckman and fairly skinny for his height.
He was quick by those day's standards, and had a good leap.
He may have played other positions later in his career.

Ostensibly a ruckman. He also played at Full Forward a fair bit, especially in his early years.

Neither Norwood or Sturt made the grand final (perhaps they were eliminated late in the finals? I'm a little young to remember, and haven't done any research on it), yet Port and South did. Port lost Ebert, yet made the grand final and ultimately won the flag.

So for those that can remember - did the Redlegs and Blues lose a few players at the end of 1978 or was it just a case of injuries, and perhaps a bit of a "let down" after the 78 grand final?

Norwood took a step up in the pre-season, gaining Bruce Winter and Robbie Barton from Sturt. Winter in particular was a huge loss to Sturt, he was their best player in the 78 GF. I remember a pre-season trial where Norwood belted Sturt by a large margin. Norwood had lost Terry Von Bertouch (retired) and Michael Gregg to West Adelaide. On the upside, they introduced Michael Aish and Keith Thomas to League football.

Sturt lost Winter and Barton and Russell Ebert (Port Adelaide) and Graham Cornes (Glenelg) headed to North Melbourne. Three of the so-called "Big 4" appeared weakened, whereas Norwood appeared to be getting stronger. Norwood soundly defeated Port Adelaide at Alberton in Round 1, and a lot of judges were already declaring Norwood as Premiers. They lost the next two games to Glenelg (1 point) and West Torrens (3 points).

After that they had an up and down season, never playing at anywhere near their best, compounded by 4 losses in a row late in the minor round. Apart from the odd highlight, 1979 was one a Norwood historian would like to forget.

As for Sturt, I know that Burgan, Derrington and Casey played little footy in 1979, they lost Winter and Barton to Norwood, and Robbert Klomp to Carlton.

Without trying to turn this into a 1979 thread of course. ;)

Probably Round 13 1979

Norwood 3.3 5.7 8.7 13.12 (90)
Sturt 2.3 3.6 4.10 4.14 (38)
Unley, 9872

Although West Torrens and Woodville occupied 5th and 6th positions in 1978 (W.T 5th, Wd 6th) and 1987 (Wd 5th, W.T 6th), the closest both came to making the finals together was in 1979. Woodville were only half a game ahead of 8th placed Torrens, whereas in 1978 it was one match, and 1987 two match differences.

Norwood played Sturt 3 times in 1979, beating them soundly each time ... 51 points (Fooball Park), 52 (Unley), & 65 (Norwood).

The game you are referring to is the June 30 clash at Unley Oval where Norwood 13-12, defeated Sturt 4-14. My notes suggest Sturt finished with only 12 fit men. Geoff Wiseman broke his left arm, Tony Lloyd went to hospital with concussion, Brendon Howard and Geoff Leonard pulled hamstrings, Rick Davies bruised his right hip. Three others, Peter Friedrichs (ankle), Trevor Sims (jaw), and Peter Hargreaves (arm) had precautionary x-rays.

No injury to Michael Graham, the player who crashed into the post was Tony Lloyd who was concussed.

We had our revenge 7 weeks later with a 111 point win over West Torrens at Football Park.

Hawk - That summary is very much appreciated by myself.
Whilst I vaguely remember the 78 GF, this game for some reason sticks out as one of my earliest recollections of watching footy.
Amazing you mention 12 fit players and i said 16, I remember it being bad but not that bad. LOL
Did baggy happen to drop his strides in this match also ?

Regarding the game in which Bagshaw kicked 10 against Port at Unley, does anyone recall if he played as a permanent forward in that game, or alternated between on the ball and deep in attack (I'm assuming he didn't kick 10 purely as a midfielder).

GALLAGHER A BAYMAN ...

1978, mid season
Phillip Gallagher rumoured to be playing at Glenelg in 1979
Rumours were rife that Gags would play at the Bay in 79 as part of the Wayne Phillis swap from GL to NW this season
Gags lived at Glenelg North, and was playing district cricket for Glenelg
People in the know were predicting that Gags would be a SA cricketer next cricket season
Gags was a Wicket keeper-Batsman

History shows Gallagher ended his career a Redleg, and a magnificent wingman
In 1978 Gags played his 100th game for NW

He played the whole season at full forward and kicked 74 goals. In one of 2 surprising moves at 3/4 time, Jack Oatey moved Bagshaw to CHF and took Bruce Winter (their best player) from CHF and placed him at FF, effectively taking him out of the game. The other was having Davies playing up forward for most of the final term as well. Not having Winter and Davies to worry about was a bonus.

One story I have yet to confirm, but will when I see Kingo Taylor again, was an incident on the eve of the 1978 GF. A photographer wanted one of those shots we see with both captains together before the match.

Paul Bagshaw used to have an unusual pre-match routine where, rather than rest, he engaged in rather hard physical labour. In 1976, he cemented his driveway, and in 1978 he decided to plough the fields. As he wouldn't meet them in the city, the photographer and Taylor drove to his property at McLaren Flat to have the photo taken.

Knowing they were there, Bagshaw effectively "dropped his pants" by refusing to get off the tractor and continued ploughing the field. I'm told this really annoyed Taylor and he used it as motivation for the Grand Final.

ROUND 11
JUNE 10

CD 18-8 WV 14-14
WT 16-18 WA 8-12
ST 23-18 NA 16-15
GL 19-11 SA 15-13
NW 19-17 PA 9-8

That man Max George kicked 10 goals, 20 in 2 weeks, I guess the recruiting staff at Elizabeth would have felt pretty good !
ST + GL continue the battle for top spot, having only lost 1 game each
NW trouncing PA was the most significant game of this round
With ST + GL flying in the top 2 spots, running 3rd and getting the second chance was imPORTant

LADDER
ST 10-1...62.74
GL 10-1...55.57
NW 7-4...56.97
PA 6-5...50.18
CD 5-6...47.47
WT 4-7...47.04
WA 3-8...45.95
NA 3-8...45.00
SA 3-8...44.97

JUNE 12
Ken Whelan departs from ST to play at Edwardstown
101 games
393 goals
To this stage it was a shortish career, but one of the greatest ever SANFL footballers to watch
To coin a phrase from a great commentator of the day "" He had a leap like a startled gazelle .""
Even though I barracked for NW, I always wanted to see Kenny take a speccy against my team

JUNE 14
Another ST layer leaves the club
Clinton Giles [22 games] got cleared to play with WT

WHELAN
Watching the way Ken Whelan played footy it reminded me of my own football career
I was the guy with the sprig marks in my back
