Watched all of Primus and my opinion of the set sways between "being appreciative to see Les Claypool go to work on a six string bass guitar" to "I wasted forty minutes watching some dude play bass guitar".

Yep, 15 minute songs that sound nothing like the 5 minute album version can do that to a man.

Was let down by the set to be honest.

Eddie didnt make an appearance in Brisbane, so was happy to see him here. Iron Maiden were well worth the cost of the ticket alone, absolutely amazing. You can see why some bands have been around so long. How Bruce Dickenson can run around like a mad man at 60 years old is a mystery!

A copy of my SL.org post:

OK- a blow by blow description of the monolith that was Soundwave 2011:

Little fella and Mrs G conspired to leave me running late, so unfortunately I missed Nonpoint. Anyone see em?

Ended up getting there about 12ish, was stopped for the obligatory bag search. A sealed bottle of water was taken, "You cant have that". Think I shocked the bloke by quoting the terms and conditions for entry which stated one sealed bottle of water allowed per patron. "Oh sorry"....Nimrod.

Anyway, wandered around a little before heading to see Sevendust. Not a huge fan, and unfortunately for them the sound blokes at stage 4 gave me an early taste of what to expect. No vocals at all until the second or third song, and just a mess for most of it. They tried hard but maybe it was just too early....

Next on the G agenda was Pennywise. I consider myself a bit of a PW old boy, having seen them on their first show here (when they were supported by a little band called Blink 182), but I hadnt been to one of their shows for at least 6 years. With a new vocalist I was sceptical, but they played a great set under the tent. Finished with the anthem "Bro Hymn" which never fails to get the blood flowing and the vocals warming. A great set, which quickly had me in the mood for more.

Time to venture to the main stage (back in the sun) to see Stone Sour. Caught the last couple of songs by Bullet for my Valentine who sounded pretty good. Stone Sour played a pretty darn good set, was stoked they played 30-30-150, which is a cracking tune . They also had the crowd singing along with the great "Through Glass".

Took a small break at this point- grabbed a $10 bourbon  and found some shade (and a few mates!)

Ventured over to the hidden stage 6 next to catch Silverstein, who are a bit of a guilty pleasure*. They played some old faves, as well as a couple of tracks off the impressive "Shipwreck in the Sand" album. Also dropped a couple of new songs of the upcoming release* including a belter called 'Sacrifice'. Have to say I thought they left some of the heavier bands on the bill behind.

Dashed back to stages 4/4a and saw Ill Nino who were brilliant. I only own one of their albums ("Revolution Revolucion"- BBC get on it!). I think they managed to win over everyone around who were clearly there early for the mighty Slayer. The 2 (and occasionally 3!) drummers gave their sound great depth and a real tribal feel which you get on their studio tunes. Was really pumped at the end of their set, a nice Intro into one of the main reasons I was there- SLAYER.

Slayer opened with “World Painted Blood” and it was clear the sound issues that plagued SevenDust earlier in the day had either returned or had never left. Seriously how hard is it to turn bass down and guitars/vocals up? Sound slowly improved, by about the fourth song the crowd started to respond. ‘South of Heaven’, ‘Angel of Death’, ‘Reign in Blood’- all the classics flowed forth from the wall of Marshalls on stage. Tom sounded really good vocally, I never did pick who the guitarist was who was filling in for Jeff Hanneman (anyone know?) but he did a damn good job. Ears were truly hammered as the lads trudged off stage, hoping for a stand alone tour again sometime soon, with the full strength line up!

Quick stride to Stage 6 to catch the end of H2O’s show- they were in fine form. Managed to get the last handful of songs, including a Madball cover (cant remember the tune!), “Guilty by Association” (taped the last bit on my camera), “One life One Chance” and “Universal Language”. Does anyone know if they played ‘FTTW’ or ‘Thicker Than Water’? Really stoked I made the trek back for that!

Time for dinner, Hooray for the Turkish pizza lady who gave us 2 for $12 instead of 1! Caught the last 6 songs of Queens of the Stone Age. The sound was so much better from the 2 main stages it was quite incredible. I have seen QOTSA a few times, and I reakon this may have been one of their best sets. Shame I didn’t see the lot. “Go with the Flow” a personal favourite!

Managed to squeeze in about 10 rows back for Maiden- Something I have waited a long time to see. Hard to think these guys are all on the wrong side of 50- they rocked! Such a professional outfit, Bruce commands your attention most of the show- does the bloke stop? As mentioned they played a few newer tracks which I don’t know very well, but when they switched to an old classic, like “The Trooper” or “2 Minutes to midnight” the crowd went apesh!t. Loved singing along to ‘Fear of the Dark’. Like most people ther, I reakon if they had played the songlist from “Live after Death” it may have been the greatest show I’d seen. Where was “Aces High” or “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. Not gonna complain though, I can finally tick Iron Maiden off my ‘must see’ list. To top it off, I nearly caught a skin from Nicko at the end- like many batsmen the late swing undid me!

From a facilities point of view, the stages still are too close, particularly 5/5a and 6 and 3 and 4/4a- would it be that hard to spread them further? Also a big increase to the number of loos (near stage 3)- but it was chaos going in and out. Would it be that hard to have one space for ‘Ins’ and one space for ‘Outs’? Drinks were a rip off but nothing unexpected. Was actually surprised bottled water was ‘only’ $3. Food was pretty expensive and some of the lines to wait were a joke. But once again not unexpected.

Once again, such a great day, I can continue to say this OWNS BDO.

Not sure the promoters can top that line-up for 2012, but gees I hope they give it a go!
