Sorry mate! I meant to just acknowledge you were correct, as a quick aside.
Unfortunately, some of my early experience on this site taught me there was a need to explain what I am talking about more than I initially expected.
Now, I can see I'm overdoing the explaining instead - I'll work on it..

I remember going to this very game SA V CD
It was the day Ron Hateley played an amazing game for SA
Hateley kicked 8 goals off the wing, and reported as a record for goals for a wingman, and I assume that would be in the SANFL
I was there with my SA mate, this game being on a Sunday
A lot of latitude was given to Hateley that day
We christianed Ron as "'The bone on his own "' from that day onwards
Hateley was a skinnish , tallish winger, just seemed to have a big motor, and had this ability to get the ball on his own

"Boundary rider" and "receiver" spring to mind. Made Tony Symonds look like the Dipper.

What an appreciation of the game you have. I'm with you. I never saw any reason why a 68kg wingman wasn't first always to the ball doing what the centre, ruck rover and rover should be doing. After all, when he got the ball, he could give it off to them as they would stand back and watch.

The Panthers disco was every Thursday night at Saint Mary's. Very well attended. Some times too well attended by the Chrysler/Mitsubishi workers from across the road.

I don't have all my records on me at the moment, but John Clarke did play after that, albeit not many times. I recall one match in 1979 where Clarke was shifted to HF against Port Adelaide at the Parade and he kicked a match winning 5 goals. Sadly, a genuine talent we saw too little of. Was short in stature but played the game much taller.

He was very much Aboriginal, his uncle Joe Clarke played as a ruckman for West Torrens in the late 60s and was also a very good basketballer.

I wouldn't put Symonds in that category at all. He always seemed to win enough of the footy against us, and always caused us trouble, especially up forward.

It was a record crowd for a Sunday SANFL match of 23,978 at the time
NW lost to CD to be on 9 wins, this giving WT a sniff for perhaps a double chance
ST just beat WA, WA almost beating ST a 2nd time this season

JULY 11
Mick Nunan signed up with NW after being discarded by ST
Nunan had arrived back from an overseas trip earlier in the month
Nunan had given ST great service over a career that spanned 188 games

Another ST player unavailable for ST in 1978
And another NW recruit
Mick Nunan was one of best exponents of the handball in this era of SANFL footy
I was shocked when he became a redleg

The recruitment of Adamson and Nunan were the two most significant events in terms of winning the 1978 premiership. Adamson's 5 goals to keep Norwood within reach, and there is a theory that Nunan assisted Hammond and Norwood to unlock the "mysteries" of Sturt and Oatey's coaching philosophies. Nunan was bitter about Oatey's dismissal of him, but seemed to be quite satisfied on Grand Final night. I've long held the belief that Nunan's pleasure that evening was less about the success of the Norwood Football Club and more to do with getting revenge on Oatey.

Glenelg pushed Sturt for most of the game only in the last qtr from memory that the Double Blues got away from the Tigers. Conditions were ordinary that day overcast and raining.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Another belting for the Roosters from the Tigers.

From the win in the second round of 1973 against the Roosters at the Bay by 160pts.
Glenelg had North's number until round 3 1979. During that time the Tigers beat the Roosters several times by over 100pts

Was the game played in Perth? SA's record over there was pretty poor at the time.

That makes this defeat an inglorious one
37-33 was the match total, would suggest it was a dry day and the Sandgropers might have outsped the Croweaters

I went to that 1978 game - SA were about 5 goals up during the 2nd qtr when Neville Roberts fractured his cheekbone colliding with SA teammate Michael Taylor in a marking contest. SA fell apart after that. WA ruckman Steven Michael got on top of Rick Davies (one of the few times Davies was challenged as a ruckman in the 70s) and Graham Moss stationed himself in a forward pocket for WA and kicked 7 goals, giving a young Greg Phillips a valuable lesson in one on one marking contests. And Peter Featherby in the centre thrashed Mark Williams who was making his debut for SA.

By 1978 did they have interchange, or was it still "reserve" players?

Also:

1. Which Stringer is that, named in the FP?
2. Phillips was alternating on the ball?
3. From tales told I'd presumed Dirk Inglis was only an average footballer, but to be named state CHF in such an era is a massive compliment, so Im guessign my presumption is off the mark?

I'd rate Inglis as a better-than-average club player but not State standard. He played in the ruck a fair bit too. That side looks pretty top heavy and slow to me.

1. Barry Stringer played for SA and was named in SA's best players by both the Sunday Mail and the Advertiser.
2. Phillips was in the back pocket all game and was killed by Moss after half time.
3. Inglis had a great burst of form during the 78 season for Torrens and did kick 4 goals for SA in this game.

I'm sure they had entered the interchange era by then. I have memory of Stan Wickham as interchange steward in the Grand Final. I wonder how he would have coped with the fiasco we see these days.

Agreed. Inglis was a fair club footballer who wasn't able to make the Essendon team but found himself in a SA state jumper. We didn't beat Victoria between 1965 and 1983, and part of the reason was our state team usually had at least one "VFL reject" playing against a team of proven quality VFL players.
