Nah - move it back to Rd 16 in July 78 where it was before - us Sturties can continue this wonderful trip down memory lane for a bit longer yet !

Until you remember the ending! :D

Nah I say lock this thread now, as from mid July is when it all started to go pear shaped for the Bays....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

When this thread gets to the 78 GF I'll be having a lot to say & it won't be about Des Foster/Phil Gallagher - there's a few other incidents from that game that should be shared with the readers...

JULY 24
The president of the SANFL Don Brebner vacated and his position was taken By Max Basheer
Judge Brebner was president from 1966-78
Don Roach[WA + NW] was the General Manager 1974 +
Max Basheer I remember as the voice of the Magarey Medal counts

JULY 25
NFL might Grand Final
SA 9-9
GL 3-8
A crowd of about 9,000 rocked up to see SA in this upset win

ROUND 17
JULY 29 +30

PA 29-14 WV 19-9
CD 11-11 GL 5-16
ST 10-15 WT 8-8
NA 15-14 SA 7-13
NW 8-10 WA 6-16

ST 16-1
GL 12-5
NW 11-6
PA 9-8
WT 8-9 ....49.98 %
CD 8-9 .....46.39 %
WV 7-10....45-21 %
SA 6-11-1
WA 4-12-1
NA 4-13

Ive noticed GL + SA both got beaten after playing the night grand final a few days earlier
GL by CD who were out of the five
SA clobbered by bottom team NA, this made SA task of making the finals almost out of contention
CD kept its finals hopes alive, winning and WT losing
48 goals PA + WV !

SANFL announces only 50,000 tickets will be sold for the Grand Final
One reason being they would like to see patrons watch the game in comfort

WA recruit Graeme Robertson had nose surgery that ended his season

GLENELG
Were 10-1
Now 12-5
I wonder if the NFL comp affected or distracted GL into a form slump?
Perhaps some news to come , might give the Bays a boost ...

The book where you have got the results from mal is incorrect on the Port/Woodville score.

This is the actual score:
Port 3.1 15.3 19.8 29.13 (187)
Woodville 3.2 4.3 9.8 13.9 (87)
Football Park, 8228

The 1978 Grand Final budget has that game at
PA 29-14
WV 13-9

PA score is out by a point ????
The WV score is 6 goals lower
That WV score Ive given is my fault
Like Des Foster Im having eyesight problems
My aplogies, 13s look like 19s at my age late at night !

JULY 27
Neil ''Bear" Button turned 26

RUCKMAN AT NW
Ive been told that Bill Wedding is the best ruckman thats played at the club in the last 50 years
Was he the best ruckman in this period ?
I didnt see Big Bill play
Was he much better than
Neil Button
David Pittman
Matthew Primus

Im thinking that Primus/Wedding might be a close comparism

SA beat Port Melbourne in an exciting NFL Semi Final game played in Melbourne

I well remember watching that game on TV. One of South's greatest efforts. Their skill and discipline in overcoming what could be described as VFA umpiring interpretations was magnificent. But that description of the ump is far too kind. It's the only game I can recall where the ump could only be described as a blatant cheat.

Then you do not recall John Caulfield, South Adelaide v Norwood at Adelaide Oval, 1972. The game won by South Adelaide after Peter Darley was paid a mark in the goalsquare when he barely touched the ball in the contest.

At 3/4 time, for some reason Caulfield told Norwood vice captain Ross Porritt he would do whatever he could to ensure Norwood would not win the game. Porritt reported the comment, and Caulfield was suspended. We all talk about biased umpiring, but this was a game where an umpire cheated and owned up to it. A black mark in SANFL football.

I am of the belief that he owned up to making a stupid comment, not to cheating.

That may be, but his final quarter of umpiring that day was undoubtedly the most one sided I have ever seen, and that is why he was suspended. A match observer was obviously not impressed.

On a lighter note, several years later I was playing in a social cricket match and Caulfield was batting for the opposition. He took a single and a mate of mine had a ping, hitting Caulfield in the side of the head as he passed the stumps.

When it was obvious he was okay, one of the players in our team said, "That's payback for cheating Norwood in 1972", or words to that effect. Even Caulfield saw the funny side of it.

I only raised it as it was an interesting part of SANFL history.

Whilst on the subject of John Caulfield, his other claim to fame was that he coached North Adelaide's Under 17 premiership side in 1987. That side featured amongst a galaxy of future AFL and SANFL players, Wayne Carey. Adrian McAdam, Stephen Hamilton and Shane Tongerie were others in that side who went on to play AFL. Rick McGowan, Chris Threadgold and Jason Spehr were other prominent SANFL players in that side, but unfortunately they all had to leave North to make their mark.

^ Yes

FROM THE 1987 NAFC ANNUAL REPORT

It is with great pleasure that I submit this report headed with the fact that the team was premiers for 1987. At the beginning of the season the confidence shown in the team was great, but losing four of the first five games, things were not looking bright. John Caulfield (Coach) advised the players of what was required to make the final five. From that point on the team only lost one game out of eighteen. Statistics of the team shows that 45 players played with 19 playing Reserves and under 19's during the year. This shows North Adelaide's beliefs in playing youth in higher grades. Stephen Hamilton, John Timms and Scott Norton were selected in the Teal Cup Squad, Darren Reeves was runner up in the McCallum Medal and nine players from the country played regularly. Credit must be given to John Caulfield and Barry Bamford (Assistant Coach) for their coaching and varied routines for training to keep the players interest throughout the year. The players must now commit themselves if they wish to play League Football, this year was their starting point. Highlights of the year were, winning the premiership, defeating Norwood for the first time in over eight years, the number of times the team fought back with constructive football in the last quarter against the wind to win. I would like to thank all the training staff for their efforts in treating injured players, for those who assisted with the mundane jobs, Frank Harris for timekeeping for his 16th season, to John and Barry for coaching and assistance, Greg White and the under 19's for their support.

AUGUST 1
Big news from the Bay, Peter Marker trained in a comeback
Marker was selected to play against NW in Round 18

Paul Bagshaw suffered a nasty injury v WT
Bagshaw had surgery and the expectation is he would miss 3-4 weeks [no details of the injury]

AUGUST 5
ROUND 18

WA 20-21 NA 6-7
PA 15-23 CD 13-8
ST 11-17 SA 7-13
NW 11-6 GL 5-16
WT 10-13 WV 10-3

WV 7-11.....45-25
WA 5-12-1..48-99
SA 5-12-1...45-38
NA 4-14......41-57

NW move to 2nd spot, GL are in disaray only winning 2 of thier last 7 games
PA beat CD in a very important game, to get to a clear 4th
WT all but ended WV season in a close game

JOHN WYNNE
The big shock at the Parade was that Johnny Elbows Two Eight Wynne played his first game of the season
A real character, a cult figure at the Parade, and perhaps the clubs most admired player in the 70s
And he was a real toughman
His nickname was elbows
He would crash into packs and collect players with those elbows of his
He even collected his own player one day
I reckon this happned one match
NW had player called White who was clobbered and had to exit the game, he ran into a Wynne elbow !!!
Two Eight played at CHF and as a Ruck Rover
What a day it must have been , Marker + Wynne both making comebacks of sorts in the same game
Wynne is my favourite NW player
Whadda legend

BAGSHAW
No details of the injury he needed surgery for
Maybe it was an unfair injury he copped ?

The 2 radio stations that called the footy were
5AD
5AN
Back in those days I reckon Bazz and Pilko had thier show on 5AD ?
Barry Ion [Bazz / Peter Plus] actually played footy for Woodville, that was in the 60s ?

ADS 7 had most of the televising rights for the SANFL footy in 1978[If my info is correct]

If you were watching Channell 7 in 16/5/1978 this was the Menu

4-00 SUPER CARTOON SHOW
5-00 THE TOM AND JERRY SHOW
5-30 THE BEVERLEY HILBILLIES
6-00 FAMILY FUED
6-30 NEWS
7-00 WILLESEE AT SEVEN
7-30 FATHER DEAR FATHER
8-00 THE RAG TRADE
8-30 POLICEWOMAN
9-30 FILM
11-00 STAR SOCCER
12-00 GOODNIGHT AND CLOSE

On SAS 10
9-35... 1978 NFL COMPETITION , Port Adelaide v South Adelaide

The front page news of the day was the death of former Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies
The News cost 12 cents to buy in 1978
I bought this newspaper and others for $1 each about 10 years ago at a Garage Sale

Don't think Baggy wanted too much publicity about the injury as it was of a testicular nature.

Yes, Barry came to Woodville in 1967 after playing for Footscray in the VFL. A hard at the ball and body HB flanker, Barry played in the losing 1961 GF to Hawthorn. Sturt's Malcolm Hill played for the winning team that day.

Barry's brother Graham was also a talented CHF for Footscray.

ROUND 19
AUGUST 12

PA 16-15 GL 9-8
SA 17-8 WA 11-7
WV 13-16 CD 14-9
NW 14-7 WT 11-14
ST 8-16 NA 7-13

ST 18-1......60-92
NW 13-6.....56-76
GL 12-7......53-45
PA 11-8......51-74
WT 9-10..... 49-97
CD 8-11.......46-39
WV 8-11......45-50
SA 6-12-1.....46-17
WA 5-13-1....48-48
NA 4-15........41-71

There were no local bookies [legal] in 1978
Had there been perhaps the Premiership odds could have been :
ST $1-33
NW $4-50
GL $8
PA $9
WT $26
CD $81
WV $201

GL lose again, PA with 3 rounds to go a realistic chance of grabbing the double chance
What was happening at the Bay ?????????????????????????????
NW found a way to beat WT , after 2 earlier losses this season
WT had a chance to consolidate the 5th spot, they had 4 more scoring shots but still lost
Top team ST narrowly beat bottom team NA by 9 points
CD agonising 1 point loss all but ended thier finals chances

WOODVILLE V CENTRALS [ADELAIDE OVAL]
WV 4-5...6-9...9-15...13-16 [94]
CD 5-2....7-5...11-7....14-9 [93]
Ray Mildenall only played 6 games for the season, and his goal tally was 4 goals
I have snippetted a play from this match
In the last qtr with the game in the balance
* Mildenhall goaled from a freakish snap from the North Eastern Pocket at Adelaide Oval.*
This goal might have been the match winning goal ?
CD had a chance to be on equal wins with WT if they won this game, and a show to play finals

I asked a long time ago about Ray Mildenhall and if he was related to the St.Kilda footballer and later basketball referee Neil Mildenhall. Adelaide Hawk said he didn't think so, but perhaps anyone else know either way for sure?
