Given West's good start to the season:
Apart from 1983, when was the last time West spent an extended amount of time leading the competition, other than winning the first couple games in a season?
Was 2003 when they beat Centrals by a couple of points the last time they were on top before this season?
Apart from 1983 and 2003, when was the last time they were on top of the ladder any time during the last half of the season? Would this be going back to the late 50's or early 60's?

Do you have similar stats for South? Apart from 1991 and perhaps 1979, what other times have they spent on top of the ladder since their last flag, and were they leading the comp much of that year?

Rounds 3-8 1965, Round 3 1966, Rounds 2-3 1977, Round 10 1984, Round 1 1986, Round 3 1992, Round 1 1996 and Round 1 2002.

Apart from 1964, 1979 and 1991; Rounds 12 and 13 1940 was the last time South have been at the top after the halfway point of the season. Since 1897, the most number of rounds that South has been top in a season is 15 out of 17 in 1938.

South gained top spot thanks to that well remembered (but I'd love to see the TV footage of) Darren Harris goal after the siren at Adelaide Oval against Port, who headed the ladder after Round 9. When you think about the distance the goal came from (ala Malcolm Blight), you would have thought someone has the video to it!

Due to the next three matches - losses to Glenelg (7 points), West (3 points), Norwood (55 points), South were two wins behind Glenelg and Central and three wins behind Port. Then came the % booster 39.16 to 19.14 win - 1.34% to only be behind Port as far as % was concerned. Including that win, South won 5 out of the next six matches. This put South only a game behind Glenelg and Port, but with superior %.

However, what is remarkable, the same three teams that stopped South from retaining the Round 10 position, all defeated them again! Even the margins were similar/identical!!! Losses to Glenelg (11 points), West (3 points), Norwood (66 points) saw South drop to fourth at the end of the minor round. That is truly amazing, and something I never noticed before. Thanks, FH!

I can go one step further with South in 1984; both of those three consecutive losses were preceded by a narrow win to Port. So:

Rd 21: South 10.21 West 12.12 Lost by 3
Rd 22: South 8.7 Norwood 18.13 Lost by 66

Also, in both of the West encounters, South had more scoring shots.

Not just more scoring shots, but shocking goalkicking.
Seems like a case of so close for South that year, moreso than just making up the numbers in the finals. South would have been 14-5 before those last three games - presumably they were second then?
Apart from 1992, have South and Glenelg ever played another finals match?
Do you have more details of that Round 13 match? Vaguely recall going to a game at Norwood on a drizzly day where Norwood won easily.
