Rudi looks a little out of his depth.

I was going to say the same thing. A little off the pace.
Although the commentators were very complimentary, providing a good target.

1986 would definitely have been one of those occasions, was almost as good as Western Australian Mike Ball in 1984

Ball takes the cake.

In 1986, I remember being outraged that Scott Salisbury got rubbed out for, IIRC, two weeks for belting a dirty Vic, who got off scott free.

A few months later...

I watched this last night.

How much has footy changed and evolved it's amazing.

How funny was the shots of the crowd.. blokes smoking, mullets very 80s

The footy was just good one on one contested footy, no switching, all kicks forward & long down the line.
Key positions brought it to ground everytime and the crumbers were there, just simple stuff.

It's not a pretty match, is it?

My recollection is Craig Bradley won it... I was in the reception room @ FP after the game.
(Could have been '86 but pretty sure '87 was 'Bradles')

They were fantastic nights (except '85 when we got thumped by 22 Victorians).
Remember Sheedy played 4 interchange players, we got flogged but protested to the AFC (Australian Football Council) & were given the 'win' by default (we also beat WA, so were 'Champs of Oz')

'84 & '86 were the best of them IMHO.

'84 was great... SA kicked 16 goals from memory (Kernahan 10, 'Rocky' Roberts 5 & Peter Motley 1) - Spelly?
Was a great night, the first State Game under lights.

'86 was fantastic... Had we lost, John Russo (Vic Umpire) would have been stabbed in the car park, I recall.
Got a match ball that night (my old man was reserve goal umpire, Laurie Argent was reserve Field Umpire)... because the match ball steward was late to the umpires room, I recall Argent placing 5 Yellow Sherrins in the fridge of the Umpires Room! I recall him taking 3, I got one & can't recall who got the other.

I distinctly remember John Russo sitting in the corner of the Umpires Room after the game, alone.
Not even the umpires were impressed with his 'cheating' that night!

Fond memories :D

As a kid watching the SOO I always thought Russo was a cheat so thanks for the confirmation.

He even showed his bias with his special comments during the 97 AFL GF. Seemed every free kick for St Kilda was there and the Crows frees were soft.

Wish SOO can be embraced again as it is in Rugby League.

Saw a bit of this match last night. Does anyone have a team list? I'm trying to compare it to what might be our current SOO side. What is evident is the strength of the on ball division in that 1987 team. I'd imagine it would wipe anything SA could currently come up with.

A current back line would match that 1987 team IMO. Pavlich/Kernahan would probably be on equal footing.

For interest sake - this would be something close to my current SA SOO team:

FB Graham Johncock (Adel) Ben Rutten (Adel) Brian Lake (WB)

HB Corey Enright (Geel) Nathan Bock (GCS) Sam Fisher (SK)

C Bryce Gibbs (Carl) Adam Cooney (WB) Ryan Griffen (WB)

HF Alan Didak (Coll) Matthew Pavlich (Fre) Travis Varcoe (Geel)

FF Brett Ebert (Port) Mark Jamar (Melb) Lindsay Thomas (NM)

R Dean Brogan (Port) Shaun Burgoyne (Haw) Scott Thompson (Adel)

I Brad Ottens (Geel) Jack Trengove (Melb) Shannon Hurn (WC)

Sub Andrew Mackie (Geel)

Agree. Would need to be some creative coaching to remain competitive with a current Vic side. I can't think of any decent current SA players for that Full Forward line?

I wouldnt have Jamar full forward, I'd probably have someone like S Burgoyne at full forward and Ottens in the pocket. Anyone remember the '93 game at the MCG, that was a great win, D Jarman kicked a bag of goals from memory.
