SFL TeamOfTheCentury Voting

Post by Head over it »

From the general discussion here is most of the names bandied around by the posters.

I could only have 20 options so have taken off the players from very early on
(Branson, Lovelock, Corbett, Croser) as not many posters would have seen them play and they are all VERY successful in their own right.

Posters can vote up to 15 times but dont have too use all 15 votes if they dont want too.

Just thought it mite be interesting to see if there are any bolters or any names mentioned that really dont deserve to be mentioned in such high regard.

Feel free to mention any other names that spring to mind also.

Interesting that not many people have voted for players like Staker and Hams who were both guns, very tough ask to pick a team from players of the past

Reasonably evenly spread except for a couple,

Obviously the forum locks in Pilmore as a certainty, and then Jolly, Fishlock, and Gunn as the next tier on the list.

After that its anyone guess.

On your post Pale Ale I totally agree always a tough job to select players from different eras.
I guess Blokes like Taylor and Pollard could be "stealing votes" so to speak on this poll, as on paper they seem to have a few more accolades. (3x tons and 4 or more flags)
But who knows. I guess most (if not all) of the players in the poll are or were guns. thats why there names have been mentioned by people on the forum.

I wonder how much weight that stats make up in the final selection process???

The team has to picked 100% on stats. couldn't do it any other way.

I see what your saying ol man emu, and agree. Hears another question then. What stats are more important?
Mail medals aside as they would be the higher individual honour ( although predominantly a midfield medal)
Is it games played / b&f's / SFL representation / premierships / goals kicked for forwards.
Which of these is used and more important when comparing two players?

I read in the southern messenger that the panel have met 6 times already to discuss the team.
Obviously they have the teams from every club as well as all the stats from the players selected.
That being said, it must be being selected on more than just stats if they are meeting regularly to "debate" the side.

If it was mainly on stats a reasonable portion (60-70%) would almost pick themselves wouldnt they???

All of these would be taken into consideration, the hard part is comparing players from different eras - particularly on things like representative football, first 50 years there are not a lot of records, in recent years it has not been as regular as the Lovelock Shield days. Unfortunately a lot of the goalkicking records were lost in 1994.

Definately a good point LGIL, Association football was put on the backburner and not played for some time during the 90-00 (could be wrong on the era but know it wasnt played for a while.) so the players in that era obviously werent selected to represent the SFL. Makes it even harder to compare.

On the Goalkicking awards is that why the SFL website only goes up to 1971. I was looking at them when putting names forward for the poll, and wondered why they didnt go back further. Going by the current poll though it looks like the 2 morphie boys are edging out the other fullforwards at this stage.

Interesting to see Pollard and Taylor on the same number of votes. Any of you older blokes out there that saw Taylor play? How would you compare them?

Was talking to someone from Morphies about this the other day. Keeping opinions aside statistically they are almost identicle (its uncanny really)

Bayden Taylor
4 xPremierships
3 xLeading Goalkickers
3 x100 goal seasons
League record Most goals in a seaon - 156
3-4 time SFL rep

Scott Pollard
5 xPremierships (One as Captain)
3 xLeading Goalkickers
3 x100 goal seasons
League record Most goals in a Match - 27
3-4 time SFL rep

Virtually Impossible to seperate them on stats and obviously playing in different eras very difficult to seperate them on opinion as the game has changed so much in the last 30 years.
Maybe 1 at FF and 1 in FP is the only way to go.... not too many others that match it statistically with these 2.

Certainly some unbelievable stats there from 2 great players. With Graham Gunn's name floating around, is it possible they both might find themselves in a forward pocket?? Wherever they finish, wouldnt you love to see a backline try and stop those three!!

What Position did Gunn play most of his career, he won a mail medal at reynella. did he win that from full forward?? if so thats a massive effort? did he ever kick a ton?
hypothetically speaking If Gunn was FF, then how could Pollard and Taylor take up the other pockets. you need somewhere for the rovers to change ;) ;) .
As mentioned (in stats only) they are virtually inseperable which one would you leave out??? Certainly dont envy the selectors thats for sure.

Cant shed too much light on gunny unfortunately other than what ive been told. Agree, in theory you need a smaller pocket, but i suppose with those 3 up forward, would the ball ever hit the ground!!

Didn't see Graham Gunn play but from what I hear he'd have been more like centre-half-forward. "Bang Bang" was awesome and you'd think he has to go in the side somewhere.
Another name will be right in the mix for the goalfront too ---- Chris Hams.

It guess it depends on how they pick the side BTP. If its on stats alone he doesnt quite stack up but if they pick it on who they think is a better player(how they would do this I dont know) then he would definately be a chance...
only a few positions in the forward line for all these names though!!!!!!
Who would have the most total goals over their career?
Not sure if true but heard that taylor played a little a CHB before FF, which makes me think Pollard might have the most. Do you have any idea (or guesstimate) BTP??
