A plebisite is optional to vote in. I guarantee it would have got up anyways. Risky ploy by Abbott because more people will get up and vote for the plan then the lazy people who just think about their own interests and wouldnt be bothered voting on the Saturday.

Even more so if the wording was neutral.

Do you support implementing a Carbon Price/ETS into our economy?

This wording along with a little bit extra generous compensation details released in the plan by govt ;)

Whos gonna go and vote for less income? Whos gonna vote against the Enviormental benefits? The government would romp it in if the plan went to a plebisite. It would take a bit of spin but meh, theyd get it across the line.

I'd like to see the experiment, Duncs.
I also think if the ALP thought they could win such a referendum they would run one and not be worried about the money.
"We have a mandate!" would be worth more to them.

Abbott has spooked them. Better off exposing it as a stunt and adding to the bank of reasons why abbott lacks judgement and leadership to become PM.

The alternative view is that Abbott is not just pulling a stunt, has hooked into very real fear and insecurity in the electorate.
You can debate whether his motives are genuine, or just opportunistic, but the issue of public fear is still there.

Promising "We won't do it." pre-election, then saying "We are doing it." after the result, before they can announce the compensation as well, was either stupid or arrogant.
It was bound to cause uncertainty and fear - and to imply that the ALP is not in control of the agenda in the new post-election alliance.

Whilst I'm no fan of the ALP at either Federal and (in particularly) State level, the idea of Abbott becoming PM is a big concern for me.

If the comment attributed to him is correct - that in a choice between pragmatism and good policy - he'll "take pragmatism every time", then this is a real poor reflection on him.

Its also a real disappointment that the Federal Liberal party don't have any better alternatives to him, that's a poor reflection on them.

The PM was a nationally televised live address to the nation on this on Sunday night.

http://video.adelaidenow.com.au/2042716307/PM-knocked-back-from-networks

So far, the Seven and Nine networks have said no.
Ten is still considering it.
ABC says it would also offer Abbott a right of reply.

Re the carbon tax being applied to fuel, the Govt has said "no" in some cases but not all cases. Why wouldn't they just reduce the excise by 6 cents a litre (the estimated carbon cost per litre) and then apply a carbon tax, for a neutral outcome?

If the PM wants a national tv address, you know that they are really feeling the pressure.

Exactly why they said no.

I can hear the cursing in the PMO from here. "Don't our national networks know what the national interest is?!"

“This is a strong climate change policy package. It will allow Australia to do its fair share in an effective global effort to reduce the risks of climate change, and to do so at reasonable cost.

I attach particular importance to the governance arrangements for the emissions trading scheme. The arrangements for adjusting targets, including through the role of the Climate Change Authority, allow appropriate flexibility in response to international developments within a stable and predictable framework. The arrangements for reviewing assistance to trade-exposed industries, including through the role of the Productivity Commission, introduces economic discipline in decisions of large consequence for national economic performance.

The treatment of the land sector will encourage new forms of carbon sequestration that create important opportunities for rural Australia. Here our pioneeering role in measuring and rewarding sequestration in soils, pastures, woodlands and forests is likely to have international influence.

The package has emerged from a policy-making process that allowed consideration of a wide range of issues and advice. I congratulate the Prime Minister and her colleagues in the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee for the sound process and on the good outcome for Australia and the international community.”
