Just looking at sides like Mallala which have not lost too many from last year, but are not quite as dominant as we might have expected them to be, although still being capable of beating everyone. Hamley have picked up some quality players (Pepe, Moody, Catterall) and although they have clearly improved, are still struggling against most sides because they too have stepped up and improved. Virginia seem to be really gelling well as a formiddable unit and Balak's mix of experience and high quality youngsters has seen them come ahead in leaps and bounds. Obviously longies, eagles and roosters are all capable also, and on their day can beat anyone.

I think the standard of footy in the APFL has progressed steadily and good on 'em. Won the last two Landmark Cups which is a fair measuring stick IMO

I'm not convinced that the best 21 available is a fair measuring stick of any competition, more of a Foxtel Cup sort of comp would be the best way to distinguish the difference.
IMO, the bottom 6 or 7 players of each team determine the overall standard of the competition. I've seen a fair amount of div. 5 SAAFL over the past few seasons and the best 21 players collectively could possibly match it with other leagues representative sides. With the names floating around in the YPFL you would of thought that they would be right up there.
In the end, it's like comparing apples and oranges, I enjoy getting out and watching country footy, seeing families set up for the day and support their club, it's how metropolitan footy was back in the 80's & early 90's.
The best thing about the APFL is that anyone is capable of beating anyone on their day, the competition is going to come down to the last round and then the real fun begins.

A hypothetical argument, I'll raise my bat and let it through to the keeper. We could waste 3 pages on this though LOL, I'm sure there's many valid points and players to mention to defend both cases.

Hamley v Virginia - Virginia 40+ pts - This will be messy with Nicklaus starting to find some form, I'm tipping 9 goals for the big man.

United v Balaklava - Balaklava 1-39 pts - Very close to tipping United this week. No Hayden or Justin Walker for the Peckers may make for a interesting day on Saturday under the Tower.

Two Wells v Hummocks - Hummocks 1-39 pts - Can't imagine Hummocks would drop this one. If they do its lights out in 2011.

It's only a guess but I reckon "Heath Pym made not available by the board this week because he booked an overseas holiday in February for last weekend. He didn't even play for us so he was genuinely unavailable. How is he supposed to know when zone weekend is gonna be way back in February? The bloody draw isn't even finalised by then."

I agree with you MC - absolute disgrace.

So what about the other Assoc reps that never played Zone? Where are their suspensions? According to some on here quite a number were not picked because they preferred to play home and away footy.

joel mont and whiskey to miss one game, they where meant to miss last week but busch couldnt be bothered worring about it thursday night .

I sort of agree that there should be a penalty for refusing to play rep footy, but in the case of zone carnivals the penalty should be served THAT weekend. The teams are picked on a Wednesday night so there is still 3 more days for the league to tell clubs if players make themselves unavailable that they are suspended. If you tell the zone coach that you can't play THAT weekend then the players can't play for their club THAT weekend either as you have said you're unavailable. Suspending players the week after is not the answer as a week is a long time in footy. By the way Heath went to the first training when there were about 12 blokes there, but he never said he was "unavailable". ;)

No probs.

Balaklava 1-39: Missing both 1st choice ruckmen, will be interesting.
Virginia 40+: Niklaus too big.
Two Wells 1-39: Big day for both clubs really. TW up in confidence. Tight margin here IMO.
