Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Postby Hondo » Wed Mar 07, 2007 2:03 pm

The ABC sell DVDs of the Grand Finals they have broadcast in the last few seasons. They also replayed parts of the 1998 SANFL Grand Final on a late night TV special recently. Makes me wonder how Channells 9 and 7 fit in to this whole rights issue for the games they broadcast in the 70s and 80s. Don't forget the ABC covered SANFL as well as the Commercial stations so they must have some master tapes too.

I have put a query in to the SANFL to see if they can shed any light. It's a very interesting issue and concerning to think that a private business has control of these games rather than the SANFL .... but that may not ultimately be the case.

Maybe it comes down to how much the SANFL cares about the history?
I mean, you couldn't imagine or see the VFL masters being sold off.

I think the rights, as far as private enterprise go - are for the grand finals - not all the tapes of games.

Which, mind you - would have to be somewhere!

Yeah, on DVD-Rs!
They don't even press them as proper DVDs.

I remember looking into trying to get the 82 prelim final and i found out that channel 10 had the rights to a lot of if not all the old games before ABC took over, they said it would take a long time to convert the footage over to Video or DVD, but be my guest, actually i urge you guys to ring them up as well. Hopefully if they get a few more calls they will convert more of the footage over, i would gladly give up some of my time to help out. They also said to me it would cost a lot of money, but anyway....

I guess it's pretty obvious, but the expense would mainly come due to the time involved in the production effort.
I imagine though there might be a few volunteers willing to lovingly devote many hours to such a task!

Probably wouldn't require the most advanced setup (broadcast Beta video player, decent video capture gear + pc).
Some video quality might be gained with pro gear, but maybe not much.

It comes back to the rights holders and whether they are willing to put up any money and/or resources for such a project.
Would be fantastic of course to see classic SANFL on DVD from the best possible source.

Remember trying to get a copy of CRASHES AND CLASHES in the mid-90s.

Adelaide Video Warehouse in Waymouth St told me they could get access to the master copy of that video and many more.

But it would cost $90 to make a copy of each video.

Ten plus years down the track, I'd hate to imagine how much they'd charge...

I rang 7 or 10 a few years back to see if I could get a copy of  The Wheel Of Fortune episode I was on (filmed in about 92) ... They said yeah, but you need to know the exact episode number etc because everything was stored away in some pretty massive archive, so perhaps this is where the expense comes from?

Might be worth getting a price and then finding 10 or more people who would like a copy and divvying up the cost?

One game I would love to get a hold of is the 1986 First Semi-Final, Woodville defeated Port ....

Could organize several copies of a few grand finals if you're interested.

Five immediately spring to mind...

Had to chase up an old Sixty Minutes story for research.

Took 18 months before Channel 9 Archives would agree to sell me the story but they finally did.

Slugged me $83 for a VHS copy.

But that was only for a 10-15 minute segment...

By the way, this is a cover from one that I bought from SA Video Wharehouse four years ago.

What's with the Warriors logo on the '81 video cover?

What do you mean MagpiesPower? Woodville Warriors were part of the competition in 1981. Is there something wrong with the logo?

I think Magpiespower was refering the fact that in 1981 Woodville were still the Woodpeckers, IIRC the Warriors logo and nickname was adopted in 1982, according to one of my editions of SA Football World.....

I'd say the video was released in 1982 ... and that was the logo they were supplied!

I thought Woodville became the Warriors in 1983 when the guernsey change came, along with the return of Blight.

Obviously the video's cover was made later in the 80's (and they used the current SANFL logos at whatever time that was).
The North "rooster" has a Candy Stripe jumper (introduced in 83), the Peckers became the Warriors in 1983 (on the field - but was known in late 1982). Also I reckon the West and Sturt logos are "updated" on what they were in 1981 (but could be wrong on that).

The Warrior name change was announced in September 82 (I was in the front row at the press conference :) ). It was the front page story in the Football Times of September 2. The first Warrior game was in 1983.
