Mandatory viewing before heading off to the footy. You'd see a whole heap of players that were good Reserves players who never seemed to quite make it in League - John Menz, Romeo Zoanetti, Alex Hryhorec, Des Drogemuller, Bob Boston.

KG's Footy Show also made a brief comeback in 1995 or 1996 I think.

Another question - when did the Maney/Cross/Soders combination start on the ABC coverage, and are they (or at least Maney and Cross) the longest running pair of regular co-commentators for the one channel?

Neil Cross started in 2001; Michael Maney joined him in 2002. David McKays' last year was 2001.

There was a Norwood player that fit this category. I can't remember his name. I think he was Norwood's reserves captain and he eventually moved to South Adelaide.

There were a number of double-ups in the 1980s, 1990.

ABC and Ch 10 both covered SANFL in 1988.
ABC and Ch 9 both covered SANFL in 1990.

...for example..

When the ABC did it in '84, I think it was also covered on commercial tv then too.

Re commentators, I think there's a few who worked on both ABC and commercial tv. And some I would say worked for more than one commercial network.

Peter Marker started on 9 I think. Then 7 and 10 as well. David McKay too I think.

Did Gerry Harrison and David Darcy both work for 9 and then ABC?

I reckon Ian Day might have worked for 2 or possibly 3 commercial stations. Did a guest stint on the ABC a year or 2 ago as well, so perhaps he worked for all 4.

One other thing - 10 covered the SANFL at one stage, I think it would be correct that that was the old ADS station. So I'm presuming that SAS (who changed from 10 to 7) in I think '87, were the only station never to cover SANFL footy.

Gerry Harrison on ABC = GOLD.

Daryl Hicks was a brilliant analyst too.

Paul Stringer from Port was another Reserves regular.

I used to hate it when they'd cut the coverage just as the League players ran out onto the ground.

They cut it as we were about to put up the Warrior run-through in the 1986 1st Semi Final. :(

Spins out of the pack. Finds the running player. And conversion.

Loved him as a commentator.

I always found him a bit robotic, albeit knowledgeable.

Gerry Harrison and David Darcy, really enjoyed those 2 in tandem.

Neil and Michael have been calling together since round ten, 2002 - South Adelaide v Glenelg at Noarlunga. Neil first called on ABC-TV in 2000, but yes, joined David McKay permanently in 2001.

Neil and Michael are currently the longest continuous play-by-play commentary duo in SANFL. Dennis Browne and Darryl Smith have also worked together for many years on 5RPH, but Darryl, apart from the odd game, does not call play-by-play.

On a lot of the 70s clips, but didn't get a gig in the 80s?
