I spoke with Wally Miller about this. He claims Potts only kicked 3 goals on Harrison, the rest were scored on ball when Bunton didn't pay him enough attention.

Some of my memories, when NW had clubrooms was the after match awards
Gerry did a few of them and he came across as a very articulate genuine sort of guy
Never personally talked to the man, but strikes me as being the sort of bloke needed and admired in a footy club

Gerry Harrison was a great servant of the Norwood Football Club for many years. He was Haydn Bunton's Assistant Coach, and coached the Reserves to the 1966 Premiership. He wanted to continue in that role but Norwood President Bert Baulderstone (Gerry's employer) insisted that Gerry spent more time on his accountancy studies.

Whelans 248 games was the 2nd highest of all players at the time
Only 19 players had achieved 200+ games b4 the 1962 season

One of those players was John Abley [212] who also retired at the end of the 1961 season
Both Abley and Whelan were 30 years old at the time

Mid 1957 was suspended for a short period by NA for not rePORTing to a 2nds match after being dropped from the League team
Played state football in 1959, then less than a year later was dropped for 2 games to the 2nds at his own request thru a lack of form

Why was it called District in that 8 season period ?

Others will know more than I, but Norwood official W.B.Griffiths put in a submission to the SAFA that players should represent the district in which they live, like the old district cricket system.

The new system of electoral football deprived Norwood of a number of established first class players, Magarey Medallist Alby Green being one. Others being A.D.Thomson, N.Mitchell, R.Correll, H.Faull, J.D.Daly, A.Daly, P.Fitzpatrick, W.B.Reed, amd J.Way.

It's worth mentioning that Charles Nitschke and George Kreusler (North officials) had previously tried to get this system into place but it had been voted down by the other clubs (3-1). When Griffiths put the idea forward not only was one of the "big" clubs putting it forward but Torrens and West had joined the SAFA thus all but ensuring it got passed (South and Port voted against it). When this motion was put forward football in this state had suffered argueably it's worst season ever (1896) in terms of lack of interest, and the lack of reporting in the daily papers reflects this. If this hadn't got passed when it did who knows what would have happened. It was a very brave and far sighted move by Norwood especially considering that they would suffer from it at first.
It's also worth mentioning that even though the system of playing for your district (team) wasn't compulsory until 1899 right from the start of 1897 players could no longer poached from weaker clubs to stronger clubs. This was where North in particular really benefited holding onto players like the Pash brothers, John Earle and James Matthews amongst others from the get go.

North had won five in that period, 1920, 1930, 1931, 1949 and 1952. I never could understand why stats from 1897 until 1906 at least weren't comsidered at that time. I can understand the argument to leave out the stats from pre 1897 (although I don't agree with the argument).

Sorry rig, realized my mistake as soon as I logged off - just another example of how even North and Sturt have been over the years. It's a long time ago so it's really testing my memory, but the point I'm trying to make is that many pre-1907 stats were not known in the early 60s (and of course the competition was regarded as inferior anyway as it was not 'League' football). I remember being astounded in about 1967 when one of the banks brought out the year's footy program and made mention of the fact that Norwood had won 22 premierships (the same as Port at that stage). "Rubbish" I said to myself and can't remember any other reference to pre-1907 stats for many years after that one-off.

QUESTION
Was Roger Dowsett as good as commentator as the other 2 ?

Roger Dowsett was a 5KA DJ who used to do the stats for Tom Warhurst and Max Hall. Unfortunately he died whilst still a very young man. For a time in the early 1970s 5KA presented the Roger Dowsett medal to the best on ground in the SANFL Grand Final.

He was called Dasher Hewett after a leading South Australian racetrack character of the time. The original Dasher Hewett was famed as a "Coat puller"at the races. I am sure that Dasher would have tugged your coat, Mal in the 1980s.

I believe it probably was. My dad played footy against Robin Bailache in the Great Southern Football League in the late 50s, I believe Bailache moved to Victoria some time afterwards, presumably he continued his footy career over there.

I think that Ian Day broke a leg very early in his career. He was only 16 when he made his league debut. He struggled to get a game at West for much of his career, they had their fantastic "mosquito" fleet which included Colin Brown, Jimmy Wright and Frank Hogan amongst others. He captained South in 1963 and played in their premiership in his last game for the club.

It is definitely Robin Bailache. He didn't move to Melbourne until well after his footy career had finished. In fact he umpired footy in the SANFL in the late 60s and also commenced at least his Sheffield Shield umpiring career in SA. He may have been still in SA when he commenced his test career, but I am not sure of those timelines.

I certainly saw plenty of "Soapy" Kantilla play. My main memories of him were of his marking ability in a pack situation. In the 1964 Grand Final he played a "kick behind the play" and he was best on the ground. He an extrememly popular team man with South and represented the state a few times.

You mention that he only kicked 31 goals in his first season playing at full forward. I would venture to suggest that the biggest problem would have been that the ball didn't get down there too often. South were a very ordinary outfit circa 1961.

I note though that 11 of the premiership 20 from 1964 played in 1961 I have highlighted them in the list but players of the calibre of Kerley, Darley, White, Skuse, Schmidt, Shaw and Ross joined the club between 1962 and 1964
