Damien NYGAARD was a half back flanker
in about 1969[?] he went to half forward and was dynamite
Against GLENELG he got an elbow into his jaw from Neil Knuclkes KERLEY
NYGAARD had a broken jaw and was out for about 6 weeks

Start of Sturt's era, start of Norwood's downward spiral.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Certainly the beginning of the golden era from Sturt. What a great team, an excellent balance of experience players and brilliant young stars. I recall it was Bob Shearman's first game for Sturt after missing the entire 1965 season awaiting a clearance from West Torrens. He took the number 1 jumper from Keith Chessell and celebrated with 4 goals. It would have also been 1st games from Dean Ottens and Sandy Nelson. Kym Stoeckel was a brilliant young player who unfortunatley got his finger caught in a lace-up jumper. His finger was wrecked so badly he never played again.

For Norwood the 1st gamers included Bill Chapman, Dean Sutter and Brian Woodcock, the red headed father of umpire Derek Woodcock. Brian would win the seconds Magarey Medal that season.

Norwood had some great players but sadly lacked the depth of Sturt whose 2nd tier players were far superior. Peter Redden was an interesting one. I believe he was a cousin of Mick Redden the Roosters ruckman. Played all 41 games in 1965 & 1966, and never played for Norwood after that. Much was expected also from Rick Abbott. The incredible statistic that was by the time Sturt won their 5th premiership in 1970, only 1 player from the Norwood line up was still playing for the Redlegs, captain-coach Robert Oatey.

Bunton & Oatey taking on Rigney & Dunn - a great roving duel.
