Football Park / AAMI Stadium top 10 moments

Postby beef » Mon Apr 16, 2012 7:41 pm

Noticed on channel 7 tonight, Cornes, KG, A.Jarman, Abernethy and Soders are picking top 10 footy park moments of all time. Just wondering what other people think will make the list.

Off the top of my head (no particular order)
1st ever game (central v north ?)
1st showdown
showdown final
state of origin 84 (kernahan 10 goals)
state of origin 92? (carey played, tony hall goal - think 1992)
GF 1978 nwd v sturt
GF 1976 sturt v PA
1st crows game v Hawthorn
1982 prelim PA v Glenelg
1984 GF port v norwood

That list looks alright although I'm not sure why '84 grand final stands out anymore than a lot of other grand finals in the 80's, including 1980, and the 3 great games between Glenelg and North from 85-87.

World Series Cricket one day match between Australia and the West Indies in 1979 ... Gus Gilmour gets a hat trick, and yes, I was there.

Number 1 will be either be the 1976 GF or 1st Crows game.

The last 2 SANFL GF's wouldnt be to far behind the closest ones every hey.

For me the greatest moment i have seen at Footy Park was Stewies Dews goal in the 3rd quarter of the 2000 GF, every person with 20 meters around me were crying like babies.

Oh no oh no Stewie Dew

Though i am biased slightly. ;)

- The fire in the cheer squad, SA v Vic, 1980-something

- The entire South Adelaide cheer squad floggers going up in smoke, 1986?

- SA v QLD, late 70s/early 80s - what a wonderful advertisement for Aussie Rules that game was

- that bloke who ran onto the turf at half time of a state game v WA back in the '80s, football in arms, ran full tilt towards the southern goals, dropped it on his boot and split the centre

- the farewell given to the Victorian umpire after he gave the Vics an armchair ride - 1983, wasn't it?

Best individual performance was probably Davies in '76 grand final, although that's difficult to admit as a Port supporter.

thought my 1 qtr playing some dodgy curtainraiser back in the 70's made Davies' effort pale in comparison

What about when Scott Hodges kicked 13 against North in a prelim in 1990?

I think the very first WSC match was played at Footy Park. I think it was an Aus v WI "Supertest".

Yeah, I wont disagree with you there. I guess Davies' game stood out being a grand final, but yeah Hodges' effort would have helped Port get there and subsequently win the premiership.

2002 Collingwood beating Port Adelaide in the Qualifying Final although PA were the raging favourites
Port Adelaide 14.11 (95) Collingwood 16.12 (108)

At least they were minor premiers though...
