For the second time in three rounds the Champions League had all eighteen coaches post a score of over 2000 points with the Longwood Lions leading the way scoring 2281 in the first round in their win over the Underdogs. The Denver Crows earnt the top billing after pantsing Halem Hawks in what was a solid return to form for the Denver Crows after a slight downer last week. The Darksiders got pretty lucky in both of his leagues - Pendlebury spudded it up but he played the lowest ranked teams in the Premier and the Champions league and walked away with a win in both comps. A solid win in the HCL has the Darkside ranked second at the moment.

The crucial matches in this comp will be the close ones and The Cat Empire and Buddy Franklin are the teams that came out on the right side of the ledger in the closer matches. This will be a key for players hoping to scramble into the eight at the end of the year. Remember folks this league is not promotion/relegation league but invitational. You'll need to make the Grand Final in this league to retain your spot (unless you gun it in another league or score heaps of points).

Champions League Tips Round 2
Marion ManBearPigs v Pump up ze Jams

The ManBearPigs got their season off to a good start last week with a fine win over Dutchys Dodos and should be too good for Pump up ze Jams here. Even though the Jams are better than I had them posted in the pre-season previews it’s hard to see them getting by the ManBearPigs. The creatures from Marion to go 2-0.

Darksiders SCE v Halem Hawks

The Darksiders have had the benefit of a reasonably soft draw if such a thing exists in the Champions League as this week he he takes on the equal lowest scorer of the first round in Halem Hawks. wycbloods has yet to splutter into action this season so a match up against the Dark Side was probably not what was needed. Darksiders SCE to win this match fairly easiliy.

Dutchy’s Dodos v Cork in the Ocean

Only twelve points separated these teams last week so this match his going to be a very tough one to call and this will be a common comment for many Champions League matches this season. So I fed the data into the Gambletron 2000 and the result will be CORKY BY 2000 POINTS???! Why you stupid machine! Dutchy to sneak over the line[b] - the coin came up heads.

[b]Denver Crows v MILLER MOSQUITOES

Denver Crows have been flying high so far this season despite not having Gary Ablett in his lineup. WTF?? While that might be good enough against many sides I can’t see him beating the Mozzies who have been scoring a bit more consistently. The Boys from Denver have been Crowing but it will be the MILLER MOSQUITOES who will win this one.

Les’s Men v Buddy Franklin

This match pits two round one winners up against each other with Les’s Men outscoring Buddy by 87 points last week so a small margin is on the cards in this game as well. Les is playing a bit closer to the form he displayed last year with Buddy Franklin yet to get out on long lead. I’m tipping Les’s Men here unless he selects a dud captain a la Honey Badgers.

Has Been v Greedy Guns

Has Been is in danger of living up to their name a bit here if they can’t get over the Greedy Guns in this match. The Guns were shot down by a white hot Crab Mustard last week and it won’t get much easier this week against the Beeners who have failed to fire a shot so far this season. I reckon this is the week that Has Been and his mate click into gear and that spells trouble for the Greedy Guns. Has Been will win this one and open his account for the season.

Honey Badgers v Longwood Lions

With Toby Greene copping a visit from the General this week then the Honey Badgers is a monty to knock off the highly rated Longwood Lions in this clash between two highly rated teams. I reckon the Lions will pay for the Badgers mistake last week as they will come out snarling. Bloody vicious bastards, Badgers. Honey Badgers to record a sweet victory.

Crab Mustard FC v The Cat Empire

I’m not feeling too confident here as Crab Mustard is regularly topping 2200 and I haven’t managed that all season. It would take a fair Bradbury for me to snaffle this one after my Pies have hamstrung me and I didn’t get a Goodes result at the tribunal. Crab Mustard FC to win this match dognammit.

Underdogs v Hips Don’t Lie

The Underdogs don’t lose too many matches but they couldn’t overcome the mighty Longwood Lions last week. I reckon this week the Underdogs bite will be just as bad their bark and just like the old days the Hippies will be running scared from the Dogs. I reckon anyone in this league that loses to me is in strife and that Underdogs will get the job done in this game.

The Darksiders have been the best performed team in Hogg history so it is little surprise that they sit on top of the HCL Premiership Table after two rounds. They've had a pretty charmed run though having played the bottom two sides but their score this week would have beaten everyone in this league except for Les's Men. There are now six undefeated sides going into round three next week and in this league any winning run that you can get on you want to stay on. It's definately a league for upsets and the big upset this week was my Cat Empire cleaning up Crab Mustard by a mere 12 points. Crabby had been outscoring me easily but my agressive trading strategy that I used to open my Premier League account pinched four points up here.

I mentioned Les's Men earlier and his form since the matches have started has been pretty freaking awesome after he scored bugger all in the preseason part of the year. Talk about a league strategy. His efforts in the past fortnight have him well placed in two very tough leagues in the Hogg. With many top teams scoring down the teams that did manage a decent score not only deserve the four points but some praise. The Marion ManBearPigs have a premiership winning habit and this week showed why managing to score 2151 as many HCL teams floundered. Has Been turned the clock back to last season a little bit with a score of 2136 to clean up the Greedy Guns pretty easily and as I mentiond, Les's Men and the Dark Side did the business.

Already things are looking grim for the bottom three sides as they don't appear to have the scoring power to remain competitive in this league. The other teams that have yet to win will be pretty desparate to open their account this week because in the Champions League going 0-3 is not an option.

Champions League Preview Round 3

Captains figures have been factored in as additional players.

Pump up ze Jams (528/5) to defeat Halem Hawks (286/4)

While the Hawks have cobbled together a side this week they haven't started that well and the Jams should go on and win their first match of the season leaving the Halem Hawks an early spoon favourite. The Hawks need a big game from captain Matty Boyd.

Cork in the Ocean (391/4) to defeat Marion ManBearPigs (304/3)

The ManBearPigs have the early average advantage but when you add the 140 (yet to be awarded) captaincy loophole points for Pendles this game swings in Corkys favour. The average per player advantage with loophole is a five points per player so the ManBearPigs have a bit of catching up to do here.

Darksiders SCE (353/3) to defeat MILLERS MOSQUITOES (565/5)

With the captaincy loophole figures in (both have Pendles as VC) these guys are both averaging around 120 points per player so far. The Darkside is averaging 123.25 per man and that kind of scoring is pretty hard to top. Darksiders have been a bit scratchy against the bottom two but has risen to the challenge against better opposition here.

Dutchys Dodos (408/4) to defeat Buddy Franklin (211/2)

It looks tight on the surface but the Swannie loophole bonus of 180 will be enough to defeat Buddy here. Buddy not out of it though as he has only used two players but Swanny will prove to be decisive.

Denver Crows (266/3) to defeat Greedy Guns (342/4)

Both teams have started poorly in this one but with an extra player up their sleeve this gives the Crows from Denver a chance to overhaul the Guns who haven't returned to their level of scoring from last season just yet.

Longwood Lions (328/3) to defeat Les's Men (534/6)

Les has used twice as many players as the Lions but their advantage is only 206 points so I'm backing the Lions to win this match. The captaincy battle in this game is Boyd for the Lions and J Selwood for Les. While both will score well I believe that Boyd will outscore the Cat skipper so that means a Longwood Lions victory.

Has Been (547/5) to defeat The Cat Empire (182/2)

The Beeners have me covered in this game as he still has another 180 to come from the Swanny loophole. Has Been's average once this figure is factored in goes up to 121.17 which is thirty points per player above what the Empire has recorded with two players used. I'll come back a bit here but it's damage limitation for the rest of this week for my boys who will suffer their first loss in the HCL.

Like Has Been, the Badgers appear to be back in town after a slow start and they look set to give the Hippies and absolute flogging in this match. Crab Mustard FC (291/3) to defeat Underdogs (430/5)

The Underdogs have used the troops but haven't gotten far enough ahead of the Crabs to secure victory I feel. In yet another Boyd (Crabs) v Selwood (Underdogs) captaincy battle I can sense disappointment for all of us who have Selwood as skipper of which I am one. It is raining heavily in Brisbane tonight so perhaps Selwood can win plenty of in and under ball against a Lion midfield that struggles to win contested footy (not a strength of Geelong's this year either though). Crabby to bounce back with a win.

Crab Mustard and Has Been had solid victories as well this week but Corky got extremely lucky again winning with only 1939 in the best league in the Hogg as the wheels totally fell off the ManBearPigs wagon this weekend.

Another team to get an unexpected windfall in a very tough SC week was Buddy Franklin who cashed in on Dutchy's misfortune as, like ManBearPigs he failed to crack 1800. Looking really out of their depth so far in this league are the Greedy Guns who are looking every inch the Division VI side they were last year posting the lowest score of the season in the Champions League and helping the Denver Crows climb to the top of the mountain.

The Hippies had the close one as they kept the Badgers winless while the unlucky loser award goes to Darksiders who got beaten despite scoring 2135 which was the second highest score of the league this week. OUCH.

Reasonably happy with the round results, sorry to Dutchy but thanks also for the % boost. A tough round going by some of the scores, here's hoping for some bigger scores this weekend.

Division I powerhouses Denver Crows and Les's Men are unbeaten in Hogg Champions League just as they are in Division I and head the field after four matches. In an outstanding start to the season, these sides do not know the meaning of the word defeat and run to the field to the tune of Rose Tattoo's 'We Can't be Beaten'. Another Division I side (who is struggling in that league) who is doing well is Buddy Franklin who now have their mojo back and sit in fourth spot. Corky from Premier League is doing much better up in the HCL than in Premier League and he is doing it nicely in third spot.

One of the most impressive sides this season in the Hogg is MILLERS MOSQUITOES and they won again, this time against last ranked Halem Hawks who at least scored a few points this week. The biggest upset of the year to date in the HCL happened when BigShow 82's Greedy Guns upstaged the highly fancied Darksiders by an astonishing 120 points as the Dark Side slumped to their second straight loss.

It was a high quality week once again in HCL with every team (including my useless mob) scoring over 2000 points even though no one up here recorded a really big score like some of the teams in the lower grades this week. Dutchy and wycbloods are probably already gone in this league for the year as they are 2 games plus percentage out of the top eight although that wouldn't worry Dutchy who has come back from worse. As for wycbloods though, I'm pretty sure he's worried.

Jeez could do with a win!
