All the parents of Auskickers got free passes on the weekend. Gonna take my boy along to his first State game.

I agree, unfortunately times have changed and I believe these games have lost their relevance. There was no real need to re-introduce them.

Get used to it. This is the first game of a six year cycle. So therefore we play WA and The Vics home and away. As for the bye year are we playing Tassie or Queensland?

Re: State game SANFL v WAFL
I would play Paul Thomas as follower and Boyd as the rover in the first ruck line up.
Not being picky and it doesn't worry me that North only have one player in the squad at this late date but how James Bennett was not added is baffling and you could make a case for Daniel Currie also? He is on present form almost the leading ruckman in the comp - certainly better than Mickeljohn who was given a bath by him 2 weeks ago???

Swap Georgiou for Rudolph and I reckon you've nailed it.

Because absolutely zero real SANFL fans are interested in having SANFL or state games as curtain raisers to the GAYFL.
So going to AFL games means you aren't a real SANFL fan?
I did not say that. I said that real SANFL fans don't want SANFL games to be curtain raisers for the AFL.

Are the tall forwards a concern? All good on their day but maybe a bit hot and cold?
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

Yeah, plus Grocke can be a bit wayward with his kicking for goal...
I think with the side the selectors have gone for, there seems to be some quality small forwards capable of crumbing and kicking goals...
With the smaller deck at Gliderol Stadium, I think playing the tall forwards deep and have plenty of crumbers at their feet will be the way to go, especially if it's wet and slippery...

Why do you say State games have lost their relevance?
The SANFL and WAFL were higher profile leagues in the 1970's and 1980's yet the State games were a big deal then.
Is a SANFL or WAFL premiership more coveted now than it was in that era? I sincerely doubt it. Club supporters then were proud to see their players picked to represent the State and not worried about them getting injured so why should they be now?

It was a contest to be the best, not the second best.
I like the state games, but not as much as normal games. I'd be happy enough to see them end, but I'll still take an interest if they keep playing.

I think as per the reason Graham states in the above post. Plus as you say the SANFL were higher profile leagues in the 1970's and 1980's.
Also, in the 70's and 80's SANFL teams had much greater local content, hence so did the State team. Most of the games (I think) were also State of Origin so it was more State v State as opposed to league v league.
I think the crowd in WA two years ago and unfortunately the crowd that will probably turn up Saturday (hope I'm wrong), will indicate the level of current interest.
Then you add in the situation where players are making themselves "unavailable".
Having said all that, I hope the players selected are proud to be selected and have a great win that becomes a highlight of their careers - and all get through injury free.

Re: State game SANFL v WAFL
I have never been huge on state games especially state leagues vs state leagues rather than out and out SOO.
I follow the SANFL regardless, i dont care whether we are the number 1 league, 2nd league etc etc i will still be at next weekends Centrals match. I dont get bragging rights if we win because i dont know anyone who follows those other leagues to brag to. I follow Centrals and whatever league they play in i will be there to watch provided they are trying and putting all resources into winning that leagues Premiership not purely being a feeder club.
I understand some blokes like Paul Thomas love playing the state games, fair enough he should have every right to play in them but my only real interest will be flicking to the Sunday Mail and checking the names listed next to the injuries column
Big respect goes out to Jimmy Allan for pulling out of the game and concerntrating on his season at Roosters, i sneakily hoping a few Centrals players might do the same!

apart from Rudolph, that is a very impressive backline, WA won't kick any more than 7 or 8 goals.

Jimmy would love to play but the facts are (as announced by our CEO on Saturday at the VP's lunch) that he barely does half a night training per week with us at present and is not anywhere near 100 percent fit so as he could not meet the demands expected re training with the SA Squad then he did the right thing and withdrew.
