Surely that's a family budgeting issue!

Question: why should I be paying for people to have kids?
An especially valid consideration in an over-populated world.
I was at a presentation recently at Adelaide Uni where graphs shown demonstrated how present post Little Ice Age atmospheric CO2 level rises correspond more closely with general human population growth than with anything else. Tax the breeders, not everyone! ;)

Initially I expected it to be Ian Plimer, he's said and written a lot about climate change and the effects of humans on atmospheric greenhouse gases.

Ultimately, humans haven't been proven to be causing anything. There is a strong suspicion we are slightly increasing the rate but few who look at the full data deny it's going to climb regardless of what we do. Which begs the question; after spending billions/trillions to reduce our emissions what is our next step when the Earth warms up and the sea levels rise anyway?

Likewise, but I'm very pleased to see others from Adelaide Uni having input to this complex and often divisive issue. The more the public have access to scientific facts, have the issues and potential solutions presented to us, and then have an opportunity to discuss and debate these matters in an open and respectful way without fear of being ridiculed or vilified, the closer we will get to a consensus on the way forward with climate change.

A survey of over 12000 peer-reviewed climate science papers has found a 97% consensus among the papers taking a position on the cause of global warming in the peer-reviewed literature that humans are responsible.

Like Latham says in his latest Quarterly Essay and I quote:

"One of the consequences of a better-educated society is that people have become more self-assured in their use of information. In knowing so much themselves, they are more cautious about the big, sweeping claims of others. In the Information Age, it seems, everyone is a master of every subject they hear something about.

This is a feature of the climate change debate. Confident, middle-class citizens who know a lot about weather events also see themselves as climate experts. The findings of climate scientists are not accepted automatically or deferentially. This is not a crude, ignorant dismissal of expertise (like that of the far-right denialists) but, rather an empirical approach to knowledge."

Another interesting point that I have noticed is the complete lack of any type of advertising for the Liberals at this stage of the game and Tony Abbott simply staying on the sidelines with Julie Bishop taking the attack role.

Not a bad strategy when you have the likes of Kevin Rudd and Chris Bowen amongst others doing the hatchet job on the ALP via the media. Costs the Liberals nothing and appears to incrementally increase their vote.

Sure it is not the media who is doing the hatchet job?? What has Kevin Rudd actually said that would work against Labor? All he has actually said is that the fight is not over, do not give up. What is wrong with that??

Nothing is wrong with that at all, clearly he cannot say anything directly against Gillard or it would lead to a leadership ballot when again he may not have the numbers, its his minders and collegues that use him as a tool against Gillard and her factional friends that run the ALP.

I did notice though that Kevin said that he likes to "wear a blue tie" in direct reference to Gillards claim that the Blue Tie brigade were there to further regulate abortion. Does that constitute mocking Julia Gillard?

Not at all. He was asked why he was wearing a blue tie and simply stated that a third of the ties he wears are blue (as they are for most men). If he was not wearing a blue tie, they would have tried to make an issue of the fact that he had deliberately not read blue.. distancing himself from her comments.

LOL, Abbott just stating that he doesn't play games in parliament ... WTF???

He's only asked for suspension of standing orders in question time at least 50 times in the life of this parliament.

One press conference in and you can already see he looks a bit rattled. After what Rudd said he was trying his hardest not to sound negative and was practically begging Rudd to announce an election date.
