Abbott will repeal the carbon tax, he has made this pledge time and time again. he has also stated that he will implement his Direct Action Policy to meet Australia's emissions reduction targets. I would like to know how he intends to pay for this without the carbon tax. For mine the has 2 options - cut government expenditure (services) or raise taxes, neither of which will be palatable in the electorate. The Carbon issue may well haunt the opposition as it has the current Government.

good! Hence the reason he has my vote.

So he will take back the increase to the pension, family tax benefit part a and b. Investment in manufacturing hubs around the country?

Will the tax free threshold go back to 6k instead of 18k? Meaning over 1 million Australians need to go back lodging tax returns.

Sounds like a great idea to repeal the carbon tax.

An interesting sideline to this thread...

I ran into John Coulter, the former leader of the Democrats, whom I'd known in those days, at a function recently.
He seemed to be saying that he thought the whole thing was a bit futile now as world population growth had already pushed us past the tipping point, and the decline of food supply and good living standards was now inevitable - and would impact before rising CO2 levels began to matter.

Dr. John Coulter is currently on the executive committee and a former president of Sustainable Population Australia http://www.population.org.au , on the commitee of the aspiring political party - stop population growth now http://www.stoppopulationgrowthnow.com/index.php and has been a passionate advocate for population control for at least a decade (that I know of) but probably longer. He has attended many functions and forums in the Hills and around the nation, as I'm sure you would be aware, to advocate his position on this issue at every opportunity. It is therefore no real surprise to me that he has made these statements, I have heard similar to these on several occasions from Dr. Coulter. I must stress that this is in no way a racist or xenophobic position, it is simply borne out of a fear that we will not have sufficient resources to sustain ourselves or maintain current living standards if population levels, regardless of race, nationality, religion or creed, continue to rise .

I have alot of respect for Dr. Coulter as he has orchestrated many ground breaking, bold and wonderful initiatives for the environment in this country, before, during and after his political career. I am still not sure if I agree with him on this matter however as I find him to be a bit of a doomsday preacher when it comes to the population issue. I'm sure many of his points are valid and accurate, but I'm not convinced that what he states will be the ultimate conclusion will indeed come to pass.

Timely announcement by the State Government today that they want to accomodate an additional 100,000 people in the Northern Suburbs through developments around Virginia. John Coulter will definitely not be amused http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/realestate/news/state-government-releases-100000person-growth-plan-for-adelaide8217s-northern-suburbs/story-fndbnymu-1226652183253.

Thanks for the update on John Coulter, Roxy.
I hadn't noticed what he had been doing while I was away in Melbourne, nor caught up since my return to SA in 2009.

I don't know whether he is right about the population issue, now, although I do share some of his concern about food and water supply.
I'm still hoping we will find a way through cheaper - rather than more expensive - energy to support hydroponics and desalination plants.
But at the moment energy technology funding is not moving in that direction.

So for now I'd support population control - until we can embrace the Dyson Sphere perhaps! ;)

I can't grizzle much about the subdivision, though I worry about burying farmland under bitumen, and think cities should be built on the less viable land, because most of the money I now enjoy came from the original subdivision of Parafield Gardens and the adjacent areas when my older sister was in property development.

It's pi$$ funny though that Christine Milne and her drop kick party are now criticising the Ruddmeister and the Labor government. Of course if you want fuel for your vehicle you just pay the price - no amount of bitching and screaming is going to bring the price down.

I remember in early versions of Sim City, you could jack up the taxes until just before the end of each year and then drop them. Then raise them again at the beginning of a new year and there was no impact on the population but you got the benefit of 10-11 months higher tax each year.

Is this what Labor have done with the carbon tax?
