I actually want the cost of living allowance gone, just so people stop whinging.
They get under 10% extra, even though any job in Sydney would pay 20%+ more than the same job in Adelaide.
The fact is, Sydney have lost (or are going to lose) the salaries of Mattner, Bolton, Morton, Mumford and White. Even without the additional money they would be able to get Buddy.
Plus, people think they just have the $900k just sitting there ready for this kind of stuff. It is spread across the players. They already got Tippett last year supposedly with that money anyway, so how is it paying for Buddy? Given Buddy and Tippett will now earn 20% of Sydney’s cap, they probably do receive 20% of the additional allowance, but so what? Take $100k per season off both of their contracts and they would still be wearing Sydney guernseys next year. Even if the whole cap was used on Tippett and Buddy, $450k each, Sydney has still found the room in their cap to pay the rest of those contracts which would still be about $1.2 million. Where did that money come from? Good management.
People are jealous that Sydney have managed to get sustained success because they are better at drafting and recruiting than anyone else. They took Kennedy, Mumford and Richards from teams that barely gave them a chance, and made them all guns. They got Goodes at pick 50 something, and Hanneberry at pick 30 something. They find players like Rampe, Alex Johnson, Nick Smith, Mike Pyke, Nick Malceski etc that other clubs all could have recruited, and give them a chance and develop them to be decent players. Sydney haven’t had the top picks like Hawthorn (Buddy, Roughead, Hodge) Collingwood (Pendlebury and Thomas), and St Kilda (Riewoldt, Kosy, Ball) so have had to find good players late in drafts, off rookie lists or from other clubs. Richmond, Melbourne and Carlton have all had an abundance of assistance from the AFL (priority picks and early draft picks) and are still a disgrace, because they have terrible recruiting staff and waste picks on Scully, Trengove, Watts, Tambling etc.
If Sydney weren’t so successful, no one would be saying anything about the additional money, because everyone knows it is more expensive to live in Sydney. If it was to be truly fair, Adelaide clubs should receive the least salary cap as it is far cheaper to live in Adelaide than any of the other capital cities, and the other State teams would be scaled between Adelaide and Sydney.
Rant over.

To that, I say, bullshit.

People in our Sydney branch who do exactly what I do earn less than me.

Typical $wans supporters response.
Why anyone earning over 100k needs COLA is beyond me.
No they didnt take them from teams that wouldnt give them a chance, they were all squezzed out by salary cap issues and $ydney offering money they couldnt match. They were always going to be guns, ie Hawks and Cats didnt want to let them go. The "bloods" culture is a media beat up when in fact armed with the extra war chest of cash they just buy their teams hence they dont need to draft well.
$ydney should have less in salary cap as its so attractive for players to stay out of the limelight. Adelaide teams more because they are in the limelight but not the kind of limelight that anyone wants.
Debatable that youre "so" successful, what is it 2 in 80 years.

I always thought that the AFL will throw $ydney out with the bath water when GWS turns successful but it look like $ydney will bring that on themselves much earlier.
The AFL will abolish the COLA before Friday and they will veto the 9 yr deal, it will be 6 max. They may even stop it all together, bringing the game into disrepute is the logical charge to stop it happening

VETERANS’ RULES

Veterans’ Allowance

The previous Veterans’ List allowance has been replaced with clubs now granted a salary cap allowance for players with 10 completed years or more with the club.

There is no longer an age requirement of 30 years.

The amount of the allowance has been calculated as a fixed percentage of Total Player Payments (TPP) per player based on the average amount of football payments excluded from the TPP for players on the Veterans’ List for seasons 2007-09, divided by the average number of players with 10 or more years’ service at one club during that period.

The fixed percentage has been set at 1.229 per cent and the allowance per player in 2013 is $112,320.

If you're going to have a COLA at all, which I question anyway, it should only apply to a certain salary threshold, end of story. Cost of living is exactly that, living, not buying investment properties, sports cars and creating business opportunities which these well paid guys would be doing with at least 50-60% of their salary if not more.

As mentioned before if the Hawks matched the $ and the term he's gone anyway, he wants the anonymity. Do we apply a negative loading to Sydney and Brisbane for having the 'getaway' factor, oh but hang on there might be less opportunity for 3rd party and endorsment deals......seriously where does this BS stop.

A very good suggestion. Then consider a first year player on $100k or thereabouts is either living with a senior player, a club appointed host family or with other first year players in accomodation likely sourced by the club it becomes difficult to argue that they need an additional 10%.

Restricted free agency should be removed from the vocabulary.
It won't exist in the AFL.

Your'e either a free agent, or you're not a free agent. This isn't the NBA (or other sports for that matter)
